IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The main reason of buying the house in some countries could be their high renting system. In some countries owning a house rather than renting renting is may good for peoples. Because in developing countries the rent is so high while buy the house may be costly but its long time investment and the property can generate good revenue.

The house rents is less in under developing countries. But the investment in those countries can also give big profit in long term investment. However, Buying property in developed countries or in under developing countries gives you good results in term of profit.

Like pakistan, India , bangladesh , in these countries buying home is important for peoples. Because in these countries the prices of property is not to high and the peoples in those countries can't afford monthly rent for life time. Moreover in these countries peoples can't live in separate house like EU or USA. So the important factor for buying the house is their culture of live to-gather and there buy power is not good to buy or rent separate homes.

If we compare the owing and renting the home. In my opinion, if the person have enough money to buy the house. I prefer to buy the house because for me its long term investment and i will free from rent tention every month so its positive situation for me. And the second thing is that , i can sell the house if i face financial crises.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for home ownership and the opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is limited. The arguments regarding 'high rent' and 'long-term investment' are repetitive and lack depth. The discussion on cultural differences (e.g., mentioning Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh) is relevant but remains somewhat superficial. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed explanations and specific examples of how these factors impact individuals or society, rather than simply stating them. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments are not fully extended.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is often hindered by disjointed sentences and repetitive phrasing. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'Moreover', 'However', 'If we compare'), they are sometimes used inaccurately or mechanically. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is abrupt. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the use of 'the important factor' without a clear antecedent. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There is significant repetition of basic terms like 'house', 'countries', and 'peoples'. Some word choices are unnatural or incorrect, such as 'renting renting is may good', 'buy power', and 'rent tention'. You rely on a limited set of words to express your ideas, which restricts your ability to convey nuance. To improve, focus on learning collocations related to finance and housing, and try to vary your vocabulary to avoid repeating the same words in close proximity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The house rents is less'), article usage ('buying the house'), and sentence structure (e.g., 'Because in developing countries the rent is so high while buy the house may be costly'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While you attempt some complex structures, they are often faulty. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb forms, and proofreading for common errors like missing articles or incorrect prepositions.
