IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I probably think it is a positive situation. I totally agree with that because renting a house is way difficult because you have to pay rent every month and it is headache for some people owning a house is also not too easy. Because its too expensive but if we have our own house then there is no big blessing than this because there is so much issues in renting a house. Because we have to listen to owner and some owners are very strange they try to make difficulties for the person who are living in their house owning a house have many advantages. I think there is not any disadvantage in owning a house we have our own house we can come when ever we want to we can go any where at any time we can do whatever we want in our house but we cant do these things in a rental house. We have to be careful while living in someone house. We cant afford any problem related to house but in our own house our children can play we can listen to the songs we can do whatever we want but we cant do these things in a rental property because there are more people who are living with us they might feel uncomfortable and also in rental properties there are some people who are good and some people who are bad and they re involved in suspecious activities. So we have to be careful with them and rent is main problem because in main big cities rents are way to high people cant afford them a single man cant afford a room in famous cities in this world so e have to try to buy our house even if we have to take loans.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the importance of home ownership and expressing a clear opinion. However, the development is limited. The ideas are repetitive, focusing primarily on the inconvenience of landlords and the cost of rent without exploring broader socio-economic factors like investment, stability, or cultural values. The argument is somewhat simplistic and lacks the depth required for a higher band. While the position is clear, the supporting points are not fully extended, and the response lacks a formal structure, such as an introduction or conclusion, which impacts the overall task fulfillment.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks paragraphing, which is a significant issue for coherence. The text is presented as a single block, making it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. There is a heavy reliance on basic conjunctions like 'because' and 'and' to link ideas, which creates a repetitive and mechanical flow. Cohesive devices are largely absent or misused, and the transition between the reasons for ownership and the evaluation of whether it is a positive situation is abrupt. To improve, you should organize your response into distinct paragraphs for the introduction, body points, and conclusion, and use a wider variety of linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic terms like 'house', 'rent', 'good', and 'bad'. There are also instances of word-choice errors and informal phrasing, such as 'way difficult', 'headache', and 'no big blessing'. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of precision and the absence of less common lexical items prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and to express your ideas with greater sophistication and clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors, including run-on sentences, missing punctuation, and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'there is so much issues', 'some owners... try to make difficulties for the person who are living'). The sentence structures are predominantly simple or repetitive, with very few attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is largely ignored, which makes the text difficult to read and impacts the clarity of your arguments. You need to focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that each sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practice using commas and periods correctly to separate your thoughts.
