IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In certain societies, purchasing a property is regarded as considerably more significant than leasing a home.

In few countries, some people want to buy their own homes due to several reasons. One major reason for this case is that they can save the money by not paying rent. As majority of persons do not get sufficient salaries from a job so they face many hurdles including pay for house. Consequently, they would not be able to live a healthy life when a major part of their salary will be paid on rent. Buying a home can results into efficient benefits. For instance, when individuals will have their own home, they can improve their living by using those rent money on the other crucial sector of their lives.

Another significant factor is that citizens can enjoy many amenities in their own homes. They might not have much facilities in renting accommodation as they are not decorated according to their will. By owing a home people can relish according to their own tastes and can furnish their houses in the way they like. People prefer to buy a home as they are stress free because they feel a sense of security in their own home rather than leasing a home. To illustrate, citizens can incorporate modern features into their house and can apply safety measures where they want to. It will enhance the outlook of their lives and they can become more confident in this regard.

From my perspective, purchasing a property is positive situation as it is a great way to live a beneficial life. It can have a wealthy impact on the mind as it changes the outlook of individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as financial savings and personal security. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument that owning a home is 'stress free' is asserted but not fully explained in terms of the broader societal impact. The conclusion is brief and lacks a nuanced summary of the points discussed. To reach a higher band, ensure that each main idea is supported by a more detailed explanation or a concrete example that links back to the prompt's core question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'consequently', 'for instance', and 'another significant factor', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear; for example, the phrase 'this case' in the second paragraph is vague. While the progression of ideas is generally logical, the flow between sentences could be improved by varying the cohesive devices and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their intended antecedents.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'leasing', 'amenities', and 'furnish'. However, there are instances of awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'wealthy impact on the mind' and 'efficient benefits', which are not standard English usage. The range is somewhat limited, and the repetition of basic words like 'home' and 'house' suggests a need for more synonyms and a wider variety of collocations to demonstrate greater lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'as majority of persons' (missing article), 'can results into' (incorrect verb form), and 'pay for house' (missing article/preposition). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with spacing and sentence construction. The control of complex structures is inconsistent, and the errors occasionally distract the reader, though they do not prevent communication. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
