IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Individuals of many countries are preferring to own a house rather than living in the rented place. Owning a home has a security on the longer term which individuals will not get in rental property. In this assay i will explore why people in some country want to own a home rather than renting and whether this trend has a positive or negative effects.

Every individuals can be benefited from the owning a home on a long-term basis. It gives security to the people. People who lives in a rental property needs to move at other place if the owner wants their place. In many cities like LA, there is a high rent for a small place which people can not afford every month and in return they will not get something they own. In order to own a home, person needs a high ammount of money. Many individuals take debt on home which have the value and sometime people can not pay it back to bank.

Nowadays, population has increased. And there is a less land for farming. If every individual buy a property and make a home for living then there will be shortage of a land for agriculture. On the other hand, many banks have provided loan on home with less interest so individuals can think about long-term and can own a home with home loan. Which is beneficial for bank and the public and it will contribute to the economy as well.

To conclude with, i think that there should be balance between homeowners and the individuals who rents a home. Because if many individuals buy a land there will be shortage of free space.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for home ownership and the evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the argument regarding land shortage for agriculture is a bit tangential and not fully connected to the core issue of home ownership. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments, such as the mention of LA or bank loans, lack depth and specific analysis. To improve, you should expand on the social or psychological benefits of ownership versus the economic implications more thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a central focus. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the transition 'To conclude with' is slightly unnatural, and the connection between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but some sentences feel disjointed, such as the abrupt shift from population growth to agricultural land. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a more fluid progression between ideas would help elevate the score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'assay' instead of 'essay', 'ammount' (spelling error), and 'Every individuals' (subject-verb agreement). While the meaning is generally clear, the use of language is somewhat basic. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations related to finance and housing, such as 'property ladder', 'financial stability', or 'urban development', rather than relying on general terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('Every individuals can be benefited', 'People who lives'), article usage ('a security', 'a rental property'), and pluralization ('some country'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and diversifying sentence structures would significantly improve your performance.
