IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Owning a own house is a good good investment and a permanent need of every guy that own house is a good & secure decision for everyone member of family such as financial security and culture.

One hand, If we are owning our own house then we don't have any expense of rent we only have the load of our own expenses we can do anything with the house and paint or etc because we are the owner of it so, it is very profitable thing to us if we have our own house. If we have a extra room we can also give on rent and get more money without any work.

On the other hand it also have the negative effects also like if we are living alone in our own house so we have to pay the bills of electricity, water, etc so we have work hard for the money so we can live a simple life in our own house we have financial burden in the younger age and a person get depressed after the burden of this in the younger ages that's it.

In conclusion, People priorities is own householder because it is less manegable then the rental so it is a good impact that people like to own their own house

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for home ownership and offering an opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. The essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which prevents a full exploration of the topic. The arguments regarding financial security and the burden of maintenance are mentioned but not sufficiently supported with detailed examples or logical depth. The position is clear, but the lack of length and depth restricts the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the flow is often disjointed. While transition signals like 'One hand' and 'In conclusion' are used, they are sometimes grammatically incorrect or used mechanically. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the vague use of 'it' throughout the second paragraph. The progression of ideas is present but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands, as the sentences often feel like a list of points rather than a cohesive argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying on simple terms like 'good', 'house', and 'money'. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'own householder' and 'less manegable'. The range is insufficient to express complex ideas, and the phrasing is often unnatural. To improve, you should focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and collocations related to finance and property ownership.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('every guy that own house'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are run-on or lack proper punctuation. While there is an attempt at complex structures, they are often faulty, such as the conditional 'If we are owning our own house then we don't have...'. The control of grammar is inconsistent throughout the text.
