IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is often argued that having a ownership of home instead of renting one is very crucial for people in many nations and the reason might be to reduce monthly accommodation cost. I think this is a positive development, particularly because citizens own a permanent wealth, which increases their security of life.
One of the possible reasons behind the urge to own a home is to reduce the accommodation cost that comes with renting apartments. At present, the accommodation crisis in different countries has increased the rent and it significantly affects ones financial situation. As a result, many people want to own a house where they would not have to worry about rents and substantially improves their financial stability. Moreover, they can invest the saved amount in something else such as their interests, businesses or just save for their future. Hence, people consider this option very reliable and important over renting.
It is largely a positive development because general people can own a permanent wealth, giving them a sense of life-time security which can be passed on to the next generation as well. Owning a land someday is a dream to many as home is generally an emotional part of our life. When people live in rented apartments, people can not do as they want and there is a possibility of leaving the house any day the owner wants. Therefore, owning a house gives people the feeling of freedom. Furthermore, for instance, during political instability, land owners are less worried about adverse consequences, providing a security of life.
In conclusion, in many countries people gives importance in owning a house rather than renting one in order to reduce monthly accommodation expenses and improve financial stability. In my opinion it is a positive situation because people get to own a place permanently and live a secured life without worrying about getting kicked out in any circumstances.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it explains why home ownership is important and provides a clear opinion that it is a positive development. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the discussion on financial stability and the emotional security of owning a home. However, some points could be further extended; for example, the mention of 'political instability' is an interesting point but remains slightly underdeveloped. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main arguments presented in the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Hence', 'Therefore', and 'Furthermore' are used to link sentences and ideas effectively. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons for ownership from the evaluation of whether it is a positive or negative situation, which helps the reader navigate the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with some flexibility. There is an attempt to use less common items like 'accommodation crisis', 'financial stability', and 'adverse consequences'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'having a ownership of home' (should be 'home ownership') and 'general people' (should be 'most people' or 'the general public'). Despite these minor slips, the range is adequate for the task, and the errors do not impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, such as 'When people live in rented apartments, people can not do as they want'. However, there are persistent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('people gives importance') and article usage ('owning a land'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of the text. To reach a higher band, you should focus on refining subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent control over articles and prepositions.
