IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

With the changing dynamics of the modern world, there has been a noticeable shift in the people's attitude towards the type of accommodation they live in. In many nations, it is very pivotal for individuals to buy a household rather than renting a house. The following situation may arise because of the lower prices of housing than other countries and due to their belief in investment. From my perspective, I think that this is a positive development as it helps an individual progress in their life.

To commence with the importance of buying a accommodation instead of renting a dwelling is that it might be relatively cheaper in few countries. This is because the property prices can be affordable and the monthly mortgage payments can be similar to renting a accommodation. Therefore, people may spend their earnings on purchasing a home, as they will eventually own property. For example, is an individual pays $1500 per month in rent but can purchase a living space with similar mortgage payments, buying a house would be more beneficial.

Moving further, another prospect of this is that it supports an individual in future. This is because as people invest in a property, therefore, they will have financial security for in the future. This will help them during any emergencies or any expenses for higher education or a business. For instance, if they have a medical emergency, then they can sell the property and use the money to cover their expenses.

Turning to why this is a positive development, home ownership can provide them with a permanent stability and less dependence on landlords. This is because an owned accommodation can reduce the stress to fulfill the rent every month and the changes to make according to the landlord. Hence, this is the reason which makes it a positive development.

To conclude, buying a living space is a better option instead of renting a house, as it may be cheaper and affordable to buy a house and it can provide financial security in the future. Thus, it is a positive development, leading to a better prospect to an individual's life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, providing reasons for the importance of home ownership and clearly stating your position that it is a positive development. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, such as the financial security and stability arguments. However, some points could be developed further; for instance, the explanation regarding 'lower prices' is a bit vague and could benefit from a more nuanced discussion of economic factors or cultural expectations. Overall, the response is well-structured and maintains a clear position throughout, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0. I have awarded a 6.5 as the development of ideas is sometimes slightly repetitive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moving further', and 'Turning to' to signal transitions between ideas. While these are functional, they are sometimes used in a slightly mechanical way. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. Referencing is generally clear, though there are minor instances where the flow could be smoother. The progression of ideas is logical, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of your argument effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dynamics', 'accommodation', 'mortgage', and 'financial security'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'buy a household' (should be 'buy a home' or 'property') and 'an accommodation' (accommodation is uncountable). You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is good, but there is occasional repetition of phrases like 'positive development'. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'is an individual pays' (should be 'if an individual pays') and 'the changes to make according to the landlord' (which is slightly awkward). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are minor errors in article usage and subject-verb agreement. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy will help improve your score.
