IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Every person dreamt of buying his own home once in a life. With the population, increasing at a rapid pace it has become one of the basic necessities. Some construct their own houses whereas some prefer to buy homes on rent. In my perception, owning a home is a positive development despite some disadvantages.

Having own home in home country is the biggest blessing. Numerous of people are unable to fulfill it because of the lack of adequate funding. Owing a home creates a sense of security in an individual that they have a safe place to live with their parents and children, and no one can ask them to leave their house which is very common while living in a rental house. One can decorate his house as per his own preferences without any restriction and also choose the interiors as per his own likes and dislikes. For instance, furniture, colors on the walls, designs of curtains, bedsheets and so on.

In addition to this, while buying own house, consumer choose location that is comfortable and spacious as per his family members. For instance, individuals prefer to buy house at a location where all the required facilities are easily accessible. Apart from this, there is no fear of increasing rents. Owing a home is beneficial for the retired person as they can spend their retired life hassle free.

On contrary, it may have some drawbacks too. Buying a home can be a lengthy procedure as individual has to apply for a mortgage loan and individual has to spend a long duration paying its installments.

To conclude, this phenomenon has multifarious pros and cons. In my opinion, its optimistic side overshadows its pessimistic side. Individual can spent years living in a same home without worrying about increasing rents and fear of leaving a home unlike in case of rental homes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the reasons provided (security, decoration, no rent increases) are relevant but could be expanded with more sophisticated analysis or real-world context to reach a higher band. The conclusion briefly reiterates the stance but does not fully synthesize the arguments presented. To improve, ensure that each point is supported by a more detailed explanation or a broader societal perspective rather than just personal preference.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'For instance', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by repetitive sentence structures and some mechanical transitions. For example, the transition between the benefits and the drawbacks is a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to the limited variety of linking words. Improving the range of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between paragraphs would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'mortgage loan' and 'installments'. However, there are several instances of awkward collocations and word choice errors, such as 'Every person dreamt' (should be 'dreams'), 'Numerous of people' (should be 'Numerous people' or 'A large number of people'), and 'Owing a home' (should be 'Owning a home'). These errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and refining the use of articles and prepositions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('consumer choose' instead of 'consumers choose'), article usage ('in home country' instead of 'in one's home country'), and verb tense consistency ('Individual can spent' instead of 'can spend'). These errors occur throughout the text. While the writer attempts complex sentences, the control over them is inconsistent. Increasing the accuracy of basic grammar and ensuring subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
