IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In many countries around the globe it is believed that it is more crucial to buy a home rather than renting one for many individuals. There are many concequences for this. And also there various results for such kind of situations. I am going to discuss it in details.

First of all, owning a home at those places where the renting home is unaffordable and without buying a house it is difficult to survive also, the areas where hunting for home and finding an appropriate accommodation is hard it is suitable to buy a house. For instance, before owning a home we were lived a rental house and it was difficult for us to manage our budget and survive easily.

On the other hand, there are many other reasons for owning home rather than renting like living in a rented house may be affordable, but the lack of facilities argue individuals to buy a new house. When someone living in a rented reservation no matter it is affordable or unaffordable yet, the matter is about offers.

Additionally, it is might be positive to buy or own a house because if we are living in a rented accommodation we are always worrying about rent and also for other home expenditures. What is more, renting a house is crucial at different places but, it is not suitable for long-term. For example, one of friend and his family have been living in rented house unfortunately, due to recent business loss they have no enough money to pay rent.

To conclude, owning a house is vital for some persons but who have the ability to buy a new one definately bought it for better

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for home ownership and offering an opinion on whether it is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is inconsistent. The arguments regarding 'unaffordable rent' and 'lack of facilities' are introduced but not fully explored or supported with clear logic. The conclusion is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence, which prevents a clear final position from being established. While the response covers the requirements, the lack of depth and the unfinished nature of the essay limit the score. To improve, ensure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and a fully developed explanation with a concluding thought.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and unclear transitions. For example, the phrase 'And also there various results for such kind of situations' is vague and does not effectively link to the following content. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or misused, such as 'argue individuals to buy' or 'no matter it is affordable or unaffordable yet'. The progression of ideas is difficult to follow at times, and the abrupt ending significantly impacts the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise. There are several instances of word-choice errors that hinder clarity, such as 'renting home is unaffordable' instead of 'renting a home' and 'rented reservation' instead of 'rented accommodation'. The student attempts to use more complex vocabulary, but the lack of control over collocations and word forms (e.g., 'definately bought it') suggests a limited range. To reach a higher band, focus on learning common collocations related to housing and ensuring that words are used in their correct grammatical form.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('one of friend'), tense usage ('we were lived a rental house'), and sentence structure ('it is might be positive'). The range of structures is limited, relying mostly on simple or poorly constructed complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and run-on sentences. The errors are frequent and pervasive throughout the text, which is characteristic of a Band 5 level. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors would be highly beneficial.
