IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries people believe that owning a home is of greater importance than renting one. I believe that this is a positive approach. Owning a home can become hard on some people, but having a place to call your own gives an individual immense pleasure.

If you have a home, you have the freedom to do whatever you want. Everything in the house belongs to you and you don't have to be obliged to someone else in order to live there. Sometimes it is also a matter of status for people. When people visit others, the first thing they notice is their house and whether they own it or not. Owning a house is costly but this issue can be tackled. You can give your house for rent which helps you clear any loans.

But more than this, individuals feel it is important to have a home is because it is an investment for the future. As years go by the evaluation of your house keeps increasing. At some point in life you can sell the house and get more than what you spent. A more practical term used for this is Return of Investment. You invest now and get profit later. Owning a home in a luxury city boosts up the Return of Investment. People want to build a house on their terms. Renting a home never really feels great. People who live in rental homes want to own a house soon. The owners may not be friendly and you will always be anxious about the initial deposit, rent, cleanliness, etc.

In general, owning a home seems more than renting one. If an individual wants to own a house, he/she will work hard to earn and save more. He/She will be invested and determined to make their wish. I think this is a positive approach and it teaches us no matter what your goal in life is, always fight for it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas, such as financial investment, freedom, and social status, are relevant. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For example, the point about 'status' is mentioned but not fully explored, and the argument regarding 'Return of Investment' is repetitive. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced explanations or specific examples to support your claims. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis remains at a Band 6 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a central theme. There is a clear progression of ideas from the reasons for ownership to the personal opinion. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'people' and 'home'. Transitions between sentences could be smoother; for instance, the jump from discussing financial investment to the behavior of landlords is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the overall flow would benefit from a more sophisticated range of linking words and better referencing to connect ideas across sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'investment', 'loans', and 'Return of Investment'. However, there is a lack of variety, and some word choices are slightly unnatural or imprecise, such as 'evaluation of your house' (should be 'value' or 'valuation') and 'boosts up' (a phrasal verb that is too informal). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and academic vocabulary to demonstrate a wider range and better control over style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'individuals feel it is important to have a home is because' (a redundant 'is') and 'make their wish' (should be 'achieve their goal'). Punctuation is generally fine, but there are minor issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy would help improve this score.
