IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people prefer to have their own homes in some countries instead of renting a house. This enables the sense of possession in humans. Pros and cons will be discussed in this essay. In my opinion , it is surely a positive situation.

Owning something of your own creates the emotion of independence. in renting houses, tenants are dependent on house owners. They cannot make their own decisions. For example, if their is any maintenance work, they have to tell their to the landlord. Sense of personal belonging is lost in this whole scenario. Owning a house is a kind of investment people like to do for the future also. They can sell the house in the case of dire need of money. Upgrading is also one of the benefits. Once somebody has lived enough in a particular house and want to get a better one , this can also happen with his personal house only. Another problem is with renting houses is the rule of yearly ten percent increase in fare. It becomes difficult for families to manage this yearly increase with other household expenses.

Renting a house is advantageous for persons have moved out for their jobs and studies. For instance, big cities offer more opportunities than the small ones. Young adults find it more suitable renting a flat or small house to move to a big city. Families who are not very well-off and spend their whole lives as a white-collar class, rent houses are accessible options for them because they cannot afford their own house.

In conclusion , owing something of your own hard earned money whether it's a car or a house or any other belonging feels like a great achievement. if anybody can afford, he should definitely tries to get his ow home instead of living in a rented house which has no stability to offer.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing an opinion on whether it is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as the sense of independence and investment potential. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The explanation of why renting is advantageous for young professionals is clear, but the argument regarding the 'white-collar class' is slightly underdeveloped. The position is clear throughout, though the essay would benefit from more nuanced exploration of the 'negative' side of home ownership to provide a more balanced discussion before concluding.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For example', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. However, there are instances where the connection between sentences could be smoother, particularly in the second paragraph where the transition between maintenance issues and investment benefits is abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'dire need' and 'well-off'. However, there are several word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'rule of yearly ten percent increase in fare' (should be 'rent' or 'rental costs') and 'white-collar class' (used slightly inaccurately in this context). While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the score to the 6.0 range as they show a lack of precision in academic register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in case of dire need'), subject-verb agreement issues ('he should definitely tries'), and punctuation errors (spaces before commas). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'This enables the sense of possession in humans.' While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors suggests a lack of control over more complex structures. To reach a higher band, the student needs to focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and refining sentence construction.
