IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries, having own home is very important for people instead of renting a house. There are some reasons behind this thinking. In my opinion, I think owning a home is a positive thing because people can live in their own house and they do not need to pay rent every month. People also feel more safe when they have their own house and they can live there with their family for many years.

One reason why people want to own a home is because they feel more safe in their own house. When people rent a house, they have to follow the rules of the owner and they have to pay rent every month. Sometimes the owner increase the rent and sometimes they ask people to leave the house. Because of this, people can have problem when they are living in rented house. They have to find another house and move their things to another place. But when people have their own house, they do not have to worry about these things. They can live there with their family and they can also change the house according to their choice. For example, they can paint the rooms or make some changes in the house without asking the owner.

Another reason is that people think having a home is good for their future. When a person buy a house, he can live there for a long time and the house can also become more expensive in future. For example, if a person buy a house at a low price, after some years its price can increase. He can sell it and get more money. Also, people can give their house to their children in future. However, buying a house is very difficult for some people because the prices of houses are very high. They may not have enough money and they have to take loan from bank. Renting can be more easy for these people, specially if they do not stay in one city for a long time.

In conclusion, people want to have their own home because they feel more safe and they do not want to depend on a landlord. They can also live in the same house for many years with their family. Although buying a house is expensive and not easy for everyone, I think it is a positive thing because people have their own place and they can use it for their future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it explains why home ownership is important and provides a clear opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the freedom to renovate and the potential for financial investment. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the 'feeling of safety' and the 'landlord' aspect. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the broader societal or economic implications of home ownership more deeply, rather than focusing primarily on the personal convenience of not having a landlord.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the security of ownership or the financial benefits. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One reason', 'Another reason', and 'In conclusion', which help the reader follow the argument. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more varied. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the link between the financial benefits and the counter-argument about affordability in the third paragraph could be smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'landlord', 'rent', and 'investment' (implied). However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing (e.g., 'have their own house', 'very important', 'very high'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common vocabulary related to real estate and economics, such as 'property ladder', 'financial stability', or 'long-term asset'. The current vocabulary is sufficient for communication but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'having own home', 'a person buy a house', 'take loan from bank'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and tense inconsistencies. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on mastering basic grammatical rules such as pluralization, the use of articles ('a', 'the'), and ensuring verbs agree with their subjects.
