IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries, having own home is very important for people instead of renting a house. There are some reasons behind this thinking. In my opinion, I think owning a home is a positive thing because people can live in their own house and they do not need to pay rent every month. People also feel more safe when they have their own house and they can live there with their family for many years.

One reason why people want to own a home is because they feel more safe in their own house. When people rent a house, they have to follow the rules of the owner and they have to pay rent every month. Sometimes the owner increase the rent and sometimes they ask people to leave the house. Because of this, people can have problem when they are living in rented house. They have to find another house and move their things to another place. But when people have their own house, they do not have to worry about these things. They can live there with their family and they can also change the house according to their choice. For example, they can paint the rooms or make some changes in the house without asking the owner.

Another reason is that people think having a home is good for their future. When a person buy a house, he can live there for a long time and the house can also become more expensive in future. For example, if a person buy a house at a low price, after some years its price can increase. He can sell it and get more money. Also, people can give their house to their children in future. However, buying a house is very difficult for some people because the prices of houses are very high. They may not have enough money and they have to take loan from bank. Renting can be more easy for these people, specially if they do not stay in one city for a long time.

In conclusion, people want to have their own home because they feel more safe and they do not want to depend on a landlord. They can also live in the same house for many years with their family. Although buying a house is expensive and not easy for everyone, I think it is a positive thing because people have their own place and they can use it for their future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for home ownership and providing a clear opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the discussion regarding financial security and the freedom to modify one's living space. However, the development could be more sophisticated; for instance, the argument about property value appreciation is a bit simplistic. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that the arguments are explored with more depth and nuance rather than relying on repetitive points about 'feeling safe'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow the argument. Cohesive devices such as 'One reason', 'Another reason', 'For example', and 'In conclusion' are used to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes a bit mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, the referencing could be improved; for example, the transition between the benefits of ownership and the counter-argument about the difficulty of buying a house in the third paragraph is slightly abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'landlord', 'property prices', and 'loan'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic phrasing (e.g., 'good for their future', 'very important'). There are also some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'make some changes in the house' instead of 'renovate' or 'modify'. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more precise academic collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the owner increase the rent', 'a person buy a house') and article usage (e.g., 'take loan from bank'). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. The punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence variety is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to demonstrate better control over complex grammatical structures and reduce the frequency of basic errors in tense and agreement.
