IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some countries, owning a home is very important for people instead of renting one. There are some reasons why people prefer to have their own house. In my opinion, I think this is a positive situation because people can feel safe in their own home and they do not have to pay rent every month.
One reason is that people want to have a safe place for their family. When a person rents a house, they have to follow the rules of the owner. The owner can also increase the rent or ask them to leave the house. This can make life difficult for a family, especially when they have children. On the other hand, people who have their own home do not have to worry about these problems. They can stay in the same place for a long time and they can make some changes in the house. For example, they can paint the rooms or change the furniture without asking anyone.
Another reason is that people see a house as something useful for their future. If people buy a house, they can use it for many years and the value of the house may increase. They can also give it to their children in the future. However, buying a house is not easy for everyone. Houses are expensive and many people do not have enough money to buy one. They may need to borrow money from a bank, which can be difficult for them. For some people, renting is better because they can move easily when they get a new job in another city.
In conclusion, people prefer owning a home because they want security and a permanent place for their family. Although buying a house can be expensive, I think it is a positive situation because people can live in their own house and it can also help them in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all parts of the prompt, providing clear reasons for the importance of home ownership and expressing a clear position that it is a positive situation. Your ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. For example, you explain the benefits of stability and the ability to modify one's home. However, the development could be more sophisticated; while you mention the financial aspect, you could further explore the societal or psychological implications of home ownership to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes your main points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the benefits of stability or the financial implications. You use cohesive devices like 'One reason is', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between ideas is more tightly integrated, rather than relying on simple list-like structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use terms like 'permanent place', 'financial', and 'security' appropriately. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the sophistication or 'less common' items required for higher bands. For instance, instead of repeating 'house' or 'buy', you could use synonyms like 'property', 'residence', 'acquire', or 'invest in real estate'. The word choice is generally accurate, and there are no spelling errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that your meaning is always conveyed successfully. You demonstrate good control over basic grammar, such as subject-verb agreement and tense usage. However, there is a limited variety of complex structures. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more advanced grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences (e.g., 'If more people were able to afford property, the economy might benefit') or passive voice constructions, while maintaining your current level of accuracy.
