IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In many countries, people consider owning a house much more important than renting one. I believe this is mainly because owning a home provides financial security and is also seen as a sign of stability and success. In my opinion, this is mostly a positive situation, although it can create financial pressure for some people.

There are several reasons why people prefer to own a house. First of all, a home is considered a long-term investment. Instead of paying rent every month, people can invest the same money in their own property, which may increase in value over time. Moreover, after completing the home loan, they do not have to worry about paying rent in their old age. Another reason is the social importance attached to home ownership. In countries like India, having a house is often seen as an important achievement and a symbol of being settled in life. Parents also want to provide a permanent home for their children and future generations.

I think this is generally a positive trend because owning a house gives people a greater sense of security and stability. They can also make changes to the property without having to depend on a landlord. However, it can become negative when people take huge loans simply because society expects them to own a house. This can lead to financial stress and affect their quality of life for many years.

In conclusion, people prefer owning homes because of financial security, social values and the desire for a stable future. Although buying a house can involve considerable financial pressure, I believe its long-term benefits generally make it a positive situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt effectively. You clearly identify reasons for home ownership, such as financial investment and social status, and provide a balanced view on whether this is positive or negative. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between the long-term financial benefits and the potential for social pressure. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the discussion on the 'negative' aspect by exploring the broader economic implications of a society obsessed with property ownership, rather than focusing primarily on individual financial stress.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Moreover', 'First of all', and 'However', which help guide the reader through your arguments. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the response. To improve further, ensure that the transition between the social importance of home ownership and the potential negative financial impacts is even more seamless to enhance the flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task. Phrases like 'long-term investment', 'financial security', and 'symbol of being settled' are used accurately. The language is natural and conveys your meaning clearly. While the vocabulary is sufficient and precise, it remains somewhat standard. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items that demonstrate a deeper command of the language, such as 'socio-economic status' or 'financial burden' instead of 'financial pressure'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Your control over grammar is strong, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. You use complex structures, such as conditional and concessive clauses ('Although buying a house can involve...', 'Instead of paying rent...'), with good accuracy. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. There are no significant errors that impede communication. To reach the highest band, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as inversion or more varied passive constructions, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
