IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In some countries, owning a home is considered more important than renting one. There are several reasons why this attitude exists, and I believe it is generally a positive situation ,despite some disadvantages.
One major reasons is financial security. Buying a house can be a long term investment because property prices may increase over the years. Instead of spending money on rent without gaining ownership, people can gradually build an asset that ca be sold or passed on to their heir. Moreover once a payment is done, homeowners do not have to make monthly rental payments, which can significantly reduce their living expenses in the future.
Another major reasons is stability and independence . Renters may have to deal with increasing rents. In contrasts, homeowners have greater control or restrictions for renters in that particular living environments. but own home gives us freedom to do whatever we want to do. In many socities, owing a house is also regarded as a symbol of financial responsibility, which makes people feel more secured.
However, owning a house is a big investment.one should have enough money to buy a decent house. it also come with responsibility of our future. One might also think to invest those money in buisness or job rather than in house to secure safe future .Nevertheless ,I believe advantages outweigh disadvantages because home ownership offers both long term financial benefits and emotional stability.
In conclusion, people in some countries strongly prefer owning homes because it provides security ,independence and social status.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining the importance of home ownership and providing an opinion on whether it is positive or negative. The ideas regarding financial security and independence are relevant and clearly stated. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the discussion on the 'disadvantages' is brief and lacks depth. While the position is clear throughout, the essay would benefit from more detailed examples or a more nuanced exploration of the negative aspects to reach a higher band. Overall, it fulfills the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific theme. There is a clear introduction and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In contrast', and 'However' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or are used incorrectly, such as 'In contrasts' (should be 'In contrast'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons from the counter-argument. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, the flow between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall coherence of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'financial security', 'long term investment', and 'asset'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'payment is done' (should be 'mortgage is paid off') and 'own home gives us freedom' (should be 'owning a home'). Spelling errors, such as 'socities' and 'buisness', are present but do not impede communication. A wider range of sophisticated vocabulary would be needed for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('One major reasons is') and punctuation errors (missing spaces after periods, incorrect capitalization). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The use of complex structures is attempted, but accuracy is inconsistent. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical slips and ensuring subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
