IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In my view, individuals tend to own a house rather than renting accommodation, which is a positive trend. The main reason is that people want a reliable place to stay, where they don't have to worry about the sustainability of living. Another reason is that owning a house is more profitable than paying rent for someone else's apartment.
People want to have a safe and reliable place that they own, which would feel safe because they own it and no unknown people can be in that house. Feeling safe in a place after having a long busy day is all a human need. That is why many people want to have a house of their own. For example, investing money in a home is the first priority for the people of my country because they want a sustainable place to live.
Another point is that individuals do not want to spend money on a rented house. They tend to invest their rent money into building their own house. Putting money into owning their own house will be a valuable profit, while spending money on rent is not as profitable as owning a house, where they can be themselves and feel safe. For instance, a corporate worker would like to have a house of his own rather than renting one because he would likely want to stay in a home that he owns.
To sum up, people want a safer and separate home just for them. For that reason, people like to own a house instead of renting one.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether this is positive. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive. The arguments regarding 'safety' and 'profit' are mentioned multiple times without significant expansion or the introduction of new perspectives. While the position is clear, the supporting evidence is limited and relies on general statements rather than deeper analysis. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the socio-economic implications of home ownership more thoroughly, perhaps by discussing long-term financial stability or the psychological benefits of property ownership in greater detail.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Another point is' and 'To sum up' to guide the reader. However, the cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some transitions feel repetitive, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise. For instance, the link between 'sustainability of living' and the subsequent points could be better articulated to improve the overall coherence. Increasing the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a distinct, well-developed focus would enhance the structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'safe', 'reliable', and 'profitable'. While the meaning is always clear, there is little evidence of less common lexical items or sophisticated collocations. Phrases like 'no unknown people can be in that house' are somewhat simplistic. To improve, try to incorporate more academic vocabulary related to finance and housing, such as 'asset appreciation', 'financial security', or 'long-term investment', and avoid repeating the same words throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally understandable, there are frequent minor errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'all a human need' (should be 'needs') and 'valuable profit' (which is slightly redundant). The sentence structure is often repetitive, relying heavily on 'People want to...' or 'They tend to...'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim for more varied sentence patterns, including the use of passive voice or conditional structures, and pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage.
