IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, buying a house than leasing it is highly beneficial for individuals, while there are several reasons for this, I believe that it is largely positive situation because it provides financial security and stability to individual. However, there is minor negative impact that is financial stress which can’t be neglected but manageable.
There are many positive sides of becoming a landlord owner. The primary one is it provides long-term stability to individuals. People can stay stress-free at one place without worrying about increasing rent or termination of lease. People can enjoy same neighbourhood for years. For example, children can study at same school over the years and can build a strong friendship. Another factor is it provides financial safety. As there might be chance to increase the value of the house, later, it will provide wealth and more finance. It also encourages people to purchase new house. Therefore, in many countries ownership of house is highly benefited to individuals.
However, it is also important to acknowledge the negative factor that purchasing a house can create a financial stress too. This factor can’t be neglected but it can manage. The long-term mortgage and heavy loans can create a burden on individuals. For instance, mostly people become stressed during a due date period of EMI.
In conclusion, becoming a house owner is greatly advantageous for people. While it provides financial security and long-term stability, although it creates a financial stress on person. Therefore, ownership of land can significantly change peoples’ life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it explains why home ownership is important and provides a clear opinion on whether it is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as financial stability and the burden of mortgages. However, the development is somewhat limited; the points are presented but not fully extended with sophisticated reasoning. For instance, the discussion on 'financial safety' is brief and could have been expanded with more specific economic context. The position is clear throughout, but the overall depth of the argument is consistent with a Band 6 level, as some points remain slightly under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The primary one', 'Another factor', and 'However', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'While it provides financial security and long-term stability, although it creates a financial stress on person.' The use of 'although' here is grammatically redundant and disrupts the flow. Improving the variety and naturalness of linking words would elevate this score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'mortgage', 'EMI', and 'landlord owner'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'financial stress' and 'financial safety' are used repeatedly. There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'landlord owner' (which is redundant) and 'ownership of land' (when the prompt is about homes). To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise and varied vocabulary to express complex ideas.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of the writing. Examples include 'buying a house than leasing it' (should be 'rather than'), 'it is largely positive situation' (missing article 'a'), and 'it can manage' (should be 'it can be managed'). Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to sentence construction and proofreading for basic errors is recommended.
