IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

These days it has been observed that, in few nations possessing a house rather than living in the rental house has becomes very essential for the individuals. In my perception, this is outrightly advantageous. my preferences will be discussed in the further paragraphs with the valid reasons and appropriate examples.

The fundamental reason for my inclinations is that having own home proves to be the best property an individual can have and the person can live how so ever he/she wants to live in there own home and in the homes which are no rental basis cannot be called as my home if he/she wants to say someone because owing the house is a proud feeling he/she can have; Moreover having a property like a house proves to be best in terms of emergency. For instance, there is any kind of financial emergency and a person is having his/her own home then it can be sold and can be meet that financial emergency.

Furthermore, in our own house do whatever we want and there is no need to ask for the permission for something that is not allowed or unspecified. For example, there might be rules like coming home early or no allowance of drinking or smoking.

In the contrary the positive sides of rental house can not be disregarded. To begin with if individuals lives in the rental home he/she can use that money in some meaningful business or trading which might prove in best carrier opportunity.

To conclude, there are both positives and negatives of owing a house sometimes everyone is not financially capable of having their own house then living in rental house proves to be the best and sometimes owing a property has its own advantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is somewhat superficial. The reasons provided—financial security and personal freedom—are relevant but lack depth. The discussion regarding the 'negative' side is brief and somewhat contradictory, as the conclusion suggests that renting is 'best' for those without funds, which slightly undermines the earlier stated position that ownership is 'outrightly advantageous'. To improve, you should expand on the societal or economic implications of home ownership rather than focusing solely on personal convenience.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'To conclude'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'In the contrary'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the transition between ideas is abrupt. The paragraphing is functional, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'best property', 'proud feeling', and 'meaningful business'. There are also some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'no rental basis' and 'best carrier opportunity' (likely meant 'career'). To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to real estate and economics, such as 'financial asset', 'autonomy', 'long-term investment', or 'housing market'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('has becomes'), article usage ('the rental house'), and awkward phrasing ('living in the rental home he/she can use that money'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing spaces after punctuation marks. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of these errors limits the score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article consistency would significantly improve your accuracy.
