IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people believe that buying a house is more essential rather than renting a home. There are a variety of reasons responsible for this. I farmly believe that it is a positive development.
There are several reasons why individuals want to own a home. Firstly, many people have a dream from their childhood to buy a house for their family members. So, they always try to make savings since they can fulfill their dream. For example, we did not have any personal house when I was a child. We used to live in my uncle house. Therefore, I did not have any privacy in that time and I always wanted to purchase a home for myself. Recently, I have completed my dream and I am very pleased that I have a personal home. Moreover, people always think about their retirement. When they will retire, they want to live their own house instead of renting one. Because they will become elderly and sometimes they will not be able to pay their house rent.
I strongly believe that it is a positive intention to buy a house. Firstly, by purchasing a home people will make an asset for them. So, it will be beneficial for their decendents in the futute. For instance, my grandfather bought a home and now my aunt is living there. Therefore, my aunt have no pressure to buy a house for her family. Another reason is that if people have their personal home, they can decorate it according to their desires. They never need to take any permission from the house owner. So, they can live with full of freedom in their own house.
To sum up, purchasing a house is very important for people, espesially for those who want to live independently. Therefore, I think it is a positive situation owing a home rather than rented house.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing reasons for the importance of home ownership and clearly stating a position that it is a positive development. The ideas are relevant, such as the desire for privacy, retirement security, and asset building. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat personal and anecdotal rather than analytical. While the position is clear throughout, the arguments could be more effectively extended by considering broader societal or economic implications rather than relying heavily on personal experiences. The response meets the requirements of the task well, but the depth of analysis is limited, which prevents it from reaching the highest band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'To sum up' are used to guide the reader through the arguments. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the transition between the personal anecdote and the broader argument about retirement is slightly abrupt. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'my aunt have no pressure', where the connection to the previous point about inheritance could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent, but the management of cohesion could be more sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'essential', 'development', and 'independently'. However, there are several spelling errors ('farmly' for firmly, 'decendents' for descendants, 'futute' for future, 'espesially' for especially) and minor collocation issues, such as 'make an asset' instead of 'build an asset' or 'create an asset'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word choice and better attention to spelling to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('my aunt have no pressure') and article usage ('in that time' instead of 'at that time', 'live their own house' instead of 'live in their own house'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are instances where sentence boundaries could be improved. The errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. To improve, the writer should focus on consistent subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions.
