IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

To have an own house is a great blessing of God. A type of house which is our own is much more better than the rent one because it give us more security, future investment, prevention from rent, and also permanent for family. Everyone has his own views, some says it is not more important, but in my view it is a positive aspect.

It is also important to own the house first but when someone has his own house it is more comfortable for him. Own house prevent us from many things like we not be worried for rent , we always stay permanent in our own home, we feel more comfortable and independent, we not have to obey anyone’s orders and many other things. For example, my best friend not have their own home first and he always in frustration and in Sad situation. It makes him mentally sick but 1 year ago his dad had buy their own home he become so happy and always he feels fresh and enjoy everything with us properly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 177 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the arguments remain superficial and lack the necessary depth for an academic essay. While you address both parts of the prompt—explaining why home ownership is important and stating your opinion—the ideas are under-developed. For instance, the points about 'security' and 'independence' are mentioned but not expanded upon with sufficient detail or logical explanation. To improve, you must provide more comprehensive arguments and ensure you meet the length requirement to allow for full task development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear structure. The paragraphing is insufficient, and the logical progression of ideas is hindered by the brevity of the text. While there are some attempts at linking ideas, such as 'For example', the overall flow is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is very limited and often repetitive. To achieve a higher band, you should organize your essay into a clear introduction, body paragraphs with topic sentences, and a conclusion. Using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') would help improve the logical flow between your sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits your ability to express complex ideas. Phrases like 'great blessing of God' and 'much more better' are either informal or grammatically incorrect. There is a lack of variety in your word choice, and you rely on simple, everyday language. To improve, you should focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary related to housing and economics, such as 'financial stability', 'long-term investment', or 'residential property'. Avoiding repetitive phrasing and attempting to use more precise, academic terminology will significantly enhance your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede communication. Examples include 'To have an own house', 'much more better', 'rent one', and 'his dad had buy their own home'. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with very few attempts at complex sentences. Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent. To improve, you need to focus on basic sentence construction, correct verb tenses, and the proper use of articles. Practicing the formation of complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions (e.g., 'although', 'because', 'which') will help you demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
