IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many countries, owning a home instead of renting one is very important for people. This is because it provides a financial security to an individual, and allows them to create a long term wealth. Although this method have some advantages, I believe it also brings certain drawbacks, making it both a positive and a negative development.
On the one hand, owning a house can be seen as a positive development because it helps in saving a monthly rent. This is because if a person lives in a rental home, they have to pay money on a monthly basis. For example, if an individual chooses to own a house instead of staying in rental homes, they may save a huge amount of money that are spent on rental homes. As a result, owning a house allows people to save a large amount of money. Additionally, this view will help to create a long term wealth. The price of the property increases on yearly basis, if a person purchase a house, they may end up building a strong wealth for future. This also provides a financial security to a family.
On the other hand, there are several consequences of this trend. Firstly, this method can be a major problem for those having migrating jobs. For example, if a person owns a house in one city and their job gets transferred to another city. The process of selling and purchasing the house can be difficult and expensive for them. Rental houses help to overcome this problem. Secondly, purchasing a house requires a huge amount of investment. Although various loan options are available, but a person has to pay some basic amount that in terms of lakh. This can be a problem for those with a lower salary.
In conclusion, although owning a house can help an individual with saving monthly rent and creating wealth for future, it also creates challenges such as problem for lower salaried people and individuals with migrating jobs. Therefore, I would consider this trend to be a mainly positive development but at the same time its challenges should not be ignored.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it explains why home ownership is important and provides a balanced view on whether it is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as financial security and the challenges of job mobility. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the argument about saving rent is reiterated multiple times in the first body paragraph. To reach a higher band, you should aim to extend your arguments with more specific examples or deeper analysis rather than restating the same point in different words. Your position is clear throughout the essay, which is a strong point.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Additionally', and 'Firstly' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the idea of property price increases and financial security is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and each paragraph has a clear central topic. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is always precise would help elevate this score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'financial security', 'long term wealth', and 'migrating jobs'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'migrating jobs' is not the standard term; 'frequent job relocation' or 'mobile workforce' would be more natural. Additionally, the phrase 'in terms of lakh' is culturally specific and not standard in international English. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. While your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your ideas clearly, it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several recurring grammatical errors. Subject-verb agreement is a frequent issue, such as 'this method have' (should be 'has') and 'money that are spent' (should be 'is spent'). There are also minor errors with articles and pluralization, such as 'on yearly basis' (should be 'on a yearly basis'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent use of articles.
