IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many countries, owning a home instead of renting one is very important for people. This is because it provides financial security to an individual, and allows them to create long term wealth. Although this method has some advantages, I believe it also brings certain drawbacks, making it both a positive and a negative development.
On the one hand, owning a house can be seen as a positive development because it helps in saving a monthly rent. This is because if a person lives in a rental home, they have to pay money on a monthly basis. For example, if an individual chooses to own a house instead of staying in rental homes, they may save a huge amount of money that is spent on rental homes. As a result, owning a house allows people to save a large amount of money. Additionally, this view may help to create long-term wealth. The price of the property may increases on annual basis, if a person purchases a house, they may end up building strong wealth for future. This also provides financial security to a family.
On the other hand, there are several consequences of this trend. Firstly, this method can be a major problem for those having migrating jobs. For example, if a person owns a house in one city and their job gets transferred to another city. The process of selling and purchasing the house can be difficult and expensive for them. Rental houses help to overcome this problem. Secondly, purchasing a house requires a huge amount of investment. Although various loan options are available, a person has to pay some basic amount in terms of deposit. This can be a problem for those with a lower salary.
In conclusion, although owning a house can help an individual with saving monthly rent and creating wealth for future, it also creates challenges such as problem for lower salaried people and individuals with migrating jobs. Therefore, I would consider this trend to be a mainly positive development but at the same time its challenges should not be ignored.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the importance of home ownership and providing a balanced view on whether it is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the discussion on financial security and the challenges of job mobility. However, the development is occasionally repetitive; for instance, the point about saving money is restated several times in the first body paragraph. To reach a higher band, ensure that each sentence adds new information or depth to the argument rather than paraphrasing previous points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the advantages and disadvantages. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Additionally', and 'Firstly' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The flow is generally smooth, but the connection between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking phrases to avoid a formulaic structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'financial security', 'long-term wealth', and 'migrating jobs'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat basic words like 'house', 'money', and 'problem'. There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'price of the property may increases' (should be 'increase') and 'lower salaried people' (which is slightly unnatural). Incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'price of the property may increases' (subject-verb agreement error), 'if a person purchases a house, they may end up building strong wealth for future' (missing article 'the'), and 'problem for lower salaried people' (awkward phrasing). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will improve your accuracy.
