IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In some nations , populace prefer to own a house rather than rent one. This is because owning a home provides financial security and a sense of stability. In my opinion, this is generally a positive situation, although it can also create some financial pressure.
There are several reasons why home ownership is important. Firstly, people consider a house to be a longterm investment. Instead of paying rent every month, they can invest their money in their own property. In the future, the value of the house may increase, which can provide financial benefits. Secondly, owning a home gives people a feeling of security. They do not have to worry about landlords increasing the rent or asking them to leave the property. For example, families with children may prefer their own house because they can live in the same place for many years.
I believe this situation has more advantages than disadvantages. One major benefit is that homeowners can have financial security after retirement because they may own a valuable property. In addition, they have more freedom to make changes to their home, such as painting the walls or renovating rooms. However, buying a house can be very expensive, and people may have to take a large loan from a bank. This can cause financial stress if they lose their job or have other unexpected expenses.
In conclusion, owning a home is considered important because it provides stability, independence and financial security. Although purchasing a house can be expensive, I believe that the advantages of home ownership outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the importance of home ownership (financial security, stability) and providing a clear opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, such as the mention of long-term investment and the psychological benefit of not having to deal with landlords. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more depth in the discussion of the 'negative' aspect, as the current treatment of financial pressure is somewhat brief compared to the advantages.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is logical. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In addition', and 'However' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument. The flow is smooth, and the reader can easily follow the writer's line of reasoning from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses relevant terms such as 'financial security', 'long-term investment', 'renovating', and 'unexpected expenses'. While the range is adequate, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations that would characterize a higher band. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary to demonstrate a wider range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with most sentences being error-free. There is a good command of punctuation and sentence construction. While the structures are functional and clear, they are somewhat standard. To achieve a higher score, the student could experiment with more varied complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, to demonstrate greater flexibility and control over more sophisticated grammatical forms.
