IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

IT IS WIDELY BELIEVE THAT IN SOME COUNTRIES OWNING A HOME RATHER THAN RENTING ONE IS CRUCIAL FOR INDIVIDUALS AS OWNING YOUR OWN HOUSE IS VITAL AS IT BRINGS A POSITIVE CHANGE IN YOURSELF.

TO COMMENCE WITH, OWNING YOUR OWN HOUSE GIVES YOU A FREEDOM WHEN YOU OWN HOME FIRST OF ALL YOU ARE NOT UNDER ANY BURDEN OF PAYING HEAVY RENTS MOREOVER YOU CAN FOCUSED TOWARDS YOUR LIFE FOR INSTANCE WHEN YOU RENT A HOUSE YOU HAVE TO LOOK AFTER MANY THINGS LIKE COST OF HOUSE YOUR BUDGET ETC HOWEVER WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR OWN HOUSE YOU ARE NOT UNDER PRESSURE OF PAYING RENTS.IN ADDITION HAVING YOUR OWN HOUSE REDUCES YOUR TENSIONS LIKEWISE IF YOU RENT A HOUSE YOU ARE ALWAYS UNDER WORRIES THAT SOMETHING MAY GET DESTROY YOU EVEN CANNOT APPLY A SCREW WITHOUT OWNERS PERMISSION .

FURTHERMORE,WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR OWN HOUSE YOU HAVE YOUR SELF RESPECT IN THIS SOCIETY AS IN CONTEMPORARY ERA SOCIETY NOTICE EVERY SMALL STEP OF YOURS SO HAVING YOUR OWN HOUSE IS A VITAL AND ESSENTIAL THING IN THIS MODERN ERSA AS COST OF LIVING INCREASING DAY BY DAY BUT WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR OWN HOUSE THIS ONE BURDEN IS NOT UOPTO YOU

IN CONCLUSION, IT IS A POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT WHEN YOU OWN YOUR A HOUSE THERE ARE NUMEROUS OF REASONS BEHIND THIS AS SOME OF THEM I HAVE MENTIONED IN ABOVE PARAGRAPHS.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for home ownership and expressing a clear opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. For example, the argument regarding 'freedom' and 'rent' is restated multiple times without adding new depth. Furthermore, the response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, as it contains only 231 words. This under-length significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the response, leading to a superficial treatment of the topic. To improve, you should expand on your points with specific examples or counter-arguments to ensure a more comprehensive discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'likewise' and 'moreover' which do not always logically connect the ideas. Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow within paragraphs is disjointed. For instance, the transition between the financial benefits of owning a home and the social aspect of 'self-respect' is abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed idea would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. You frequently use basic terms like 'house' and 'own' throughout the text. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'apply a screw' instead of 'make modifications' or 'something may get destroy' instead of 'something may get damaged'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas with precision. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'financial stability', 'property investment', or 'long-term security', and focus on using words in their correct grammatical context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'IT IS WIDELY BELIEVE' (should be 'believed'), 'you can focused' (should be 'focus'), and 'this one burden is not uopto you'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and incorrect capitalization throughout the text. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and the lack of complex sentence structures limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tenses will help improve your accuracy.
