IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent time, people prioritize building a house than renting an apartment in most countries. This is majorly cause by higher apartment rent and traditional belief. However, this is largely negative because of financial tension and environment hazard.
The major reason why people invested in their own house is because of costly apartment price and cultural values. Firstly, in most countries landlords keep on increasing apartment rent every year such that people could no longer afford to stay in a comfortable apartment, as a result people prefer to construct their house. Secondly, their some ethnical group that believe owning a building is an achievement so this set of people always struggle to build their own house. For instance, Yoruba people in Nigeria always prioritized owning a home no matter their socio-economic class.
Personally, I Believe this is largely negative because it can result in environmental problem such as global warming and deforestation. This means the more houses that are constructed the more forest will be cleared. Although people do derive joy in building a home, they are causing more harm to the environment. While trees are cut down, we are greatly predisposed to erosion and heavy wind. Furthermore, people usually put themselves in some unpleasant tensions such that some will request for loan in order to build a home. For example, people in low socio-economic class are always under pressure when they are constructing their house because of the heavy loans which cause them struggling in feeding themselves.
In conclusion, the prevalent of owning a house among people in most countries is cause by traditional value and high costly of apartment rent. However, I believe this is a great issue to the society because of financial pressure and exposure of environment to danger..

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as rising rents and cultural expectations, and the negative impacts on the environment and personal finances. However, the development of these points is somewhat superficial. For instance, the link between home construction and global warming is mentioned but not fully explored in a nuanced way. The position is clear throughout, but the supporting arguments would benefit from more depth and specific examples to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'their some ethnical group' (likely meaning 'there are some ethnic groups'). The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a more natural progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons from the opinion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'predisposed' and 'socio-economic', but there are also consistent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'environment hazard' instead of 'environmental hazards' and 'high costly of apartment rent' instead of 'high cost of rent'. Some phrasing is repetitive, and the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'This is majorly cause by' (caused by), 'their some ethnical group' (there are some ethnic groups), and 'the prevalent of owning a house' (the prevalence). Subject-verb agreement and word form errors are noticeable throughout. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors indicates a lack of control over more complex structures, keeping the score in the 5.5 to 6.0 range.
