IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In many nations, it is very crucial for people to own a home rather than live in a rent house. This gives them saftey and less anxiety which they can't get in a rent home. It should be seen as positive situation because it gives freedom and security to the family.
To begin with the first reason, in a rent home people dont have freedom to construct anything in that home for their faciities, they always have to take permission from the owner of the apartment and this feeling gives them a need to buy their own house. Owning their own apartment gives feeling of fulfilment and protection for their family. In addition, a family can easily theier home to buy another in other city if they want to move on for the better future of their family.
One more positive aspect of owning a home is protection of the family and less financial burden like if a family own a home they have saftey that no landlord will move them out of this house because people who live in rent house always have to accept what their owner of the house would tell them As a result people feel that owning a home is a biggest blessing. Also owning a home add less finnacial pressure on the person who is handling all the expenses of the house because in a rent home you have to pay many dollars to landlord each month on a specific date this put extra pressure on the family.
In conclusion, owning a apartment is a positive situation because it give more freedom and less financial constrains to the family rather than living in a rent house.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and expressing a clear opinion on whether it is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, focusing on freedom, security, and financial stability. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the 'landlord' aspect, which is mentioned in both the second and third paragraphs. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on the broader societal or economic implications of home ownership rather than focusing solely on the landlord-tenant relationship. The position is consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a clear, developed argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'like if a family own a home'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the connection between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several spelling errors, such as 'saftey', 'faciities', 'theier', and 'finnacial'. Additionally, the word choice is often repetitive, particularly the use of 'rent home' and 'owning a home'. To improve, you should incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations related to housing and economics. For example, instead of 'rent home', use 'rental property' or 'tenancy'. The current range is sufficient to convey meaning, but the frequent spelling errors and limited vocabulary variety prevent a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'a family own a home'), missing articles, and incorrect word forms (e.g., 'it give more freedom'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences lacking necessary commas or periods. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar structures limits the score. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
