IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Renting a home or buying a home is one of the most essential topics in everyone's life. Many people show an interest in buying a home by spending all their assets, while others prefer to rent an apartment. Every individual is suffering from the chaos of their lives , and different individuals have different opinions based on their situations.

Regarding the idea of buying homes, in some countries , people want to purchase houses or apartments for themselves by utilizing all their wealth. They believe that investing in a home will provide them with a profit in return, which will double in amount. Individuals want a one-time investment and prefer to take advantage of their residence for their whole lives . They do not want to pay rent monthly or experience the stress of giving a large portion of money for their rented house. They use that money to build something more valuable for their families and future generations.

On the other hand , instead of buying an apartment, some people favor renting because they have limited resources for survival. They hope to find a place where facilities are easily accessible. They try to spend their money on their children's education. Education provides them with a chance to escape the daily grind.

In conclusion, both opinions are valid in their own ways . Wealthy people try to secure their future by buying homes and other assets , while middle-class people attempt to manage their regular life challenges and aspire to improve their families' situations .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you explain why people buy homes (investment, avoiding rent), the discussion on renting is less focused on the prompt's core question regarding the 'importance' of ownership. Furthermore, your opinion on whether this situation is positive or negative is not clearly stated; you conclude that 'both opinions are valid' without taking a definitive stance. To reach a higher band, ensure you clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout, providing more depth to your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Regarding the idea of', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the transition between the reasons for buying and the reasons for renting could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression within the paragraphs could be more sophisticated to better link the ideas to your overall argument. Overall, the structure is sufficient to follow your line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'assets', 'investment', and 'daily grind'. There are some instances where word choice could be more precise; for example, 'suffering from the chaos of their lives' is a bit informal and slightly imprecise in this context. You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, but there are occasional inaccuracies in collocation. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of academic collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are some grammatical errors, such as the unnecessary space before commas (e.g., 'countries ,') and minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. Complex structures are attempted, but they are not always error-free. The punctuation is generally functional, though the spacing errors are distracting. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence variety and proofreading for minor mechanical errors will help improve your score.
