IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries, owning a home is considered more crucial than renting one. This is mainly because people want financial security and a permanent place to live. In my prespective, i believe that this is generaly a positive solution, although it can create some financial pressure.

There are several reasons why people prefer to own a house. First of all, a home is considered a long-term investment. instead of paying high rent every month without gaining ownership, people can pay a mortgage and eventually become the owner of the property. For example, a person who can buys a house at a young age may have a valuable assest when they retire. Secondly, homeowners have more freedom to decorate or change their property according to their preferences. They do not need permission from a landlord for every small changes.

However, owning a home can also have some disadvantages. The main problems is the high price of buying a poeperty. People may need to take a large amount of loan, which can create financial stress for many years. In addition, homeowners are usually responsible for repairs, maintenance and other expenses. By contrast, renting is often more flexible, especially for people who frequently change thier jobs and cities.

Overall, I think the importance of owning a home is mostly positive because it provides stability, independence and financial security. Nevertheless, people should carefully cosndier their income and future plans before buying a property.

In conclusion, although owning a home is considered valuable assest for future and if young people buy in early age that is the big achievement. However, it also causes financial burden for individual because they can take loan on higher interest.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it explains why home ownership is important (financial security, investment, freedom) and provides a clear opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. However, the conclusion is somewhat repetitive, as it restates points already made in the body paragraphs without adding new insight. To reach a higher band, ensure that the conclusion synthesizes the main arguments rather than simply summarizing them. The position is clear throughout, and the arguments are supported with logical reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'By contrast' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas from the benefits of ownership to the drawbacks and finally to the overall assessment is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'mortgage', 'investment', and 'property'. However, there are several spelling errors ('prespective', 'generaly', 'assest', 'poeperty', 'thier', 'cosndier') that detract from the overall quality. While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range, and focus on accuracy in spelling for common academic terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'a person who can buys' (should be 'can buy'), 'every small changes' (should be 'every small change'), and 'the main problems is' (should be 'the main problem is'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as 'i believe'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede understanding. To achieve a higher band, aim for more consistent control over subject-verb agreement and pluralization in complex sentences.
