IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In many countries, ownership of house experiencing an upward trend than of renting an apartment. This preference can be attributed to several financial and social factors. In my opinion, although ownership of home can place a considerable financial burden, it is generally a positive development because it provides a long-term financial security and sense of stability.
One important reason why people prefer to own their homes is that property is often regarded as a long-term investment. Unlike rent paying, which do not provide any ownership rights, mortgage payments can eventually result in individual an owner of the valuable asset. In addition, property prices are tend to increase over time in many areas, allowing home ownership to turn into wealth. For example, a family that purchases a house in a growing city may find that its value increases considerably over several decades.
Another reason is the sense of security and independence that home ownership provides. Tenants may often move to if the landlord decides to sell the property or increase the rent. Homeowners, by contrast, can make decisions about their property without seeking permission from any person. This can be particularly important for families with children, as owning a permanent home can provide a stable environment in which children can grow up.
In conclusion, people in some countries prefer owning a house than renting because it is viewed as a valuable investment and provides greater stability and independence. Although, buying a property can be financially challenging, I believe that home ownership is generally a positive situation because it can strengthen people's long-term financial security.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing clear reasons for the importance of home ownership and a distinct opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the discussion of property as a long-term investment and the psychological benefits of stability. However, the development could be slightly more nuanced to reach a higher band; for instance, the 'negative' side of the situation is only briefly acknowledged as a 'financial burden' without exploring the potential downsides of being tied to a specific location or the risks of market fluctuations. Overall, the position is clear and maintained throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'In addition,' 'By contrast,' and 'In conclusion.' However, the use of referencing is occasionally slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with flow, such as the slightly awkward phrasing in the opening sentence. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons for ownership from the evaluation of the situation, contributing to a coherent overall structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You demonstrate a good grasp of topic-specific terminology like 'mortgage payments,' 'ownership rights,' and 'financial burden.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'ownership of house experiencing an upward trend' (should be 'is experiencing') and 'property prices are tend to increase' (should be 'tend to increase'). While you attempt some less common vocabulary, the range is adequate rather than wide or sophisticated. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips that prevent a higher score. For example, 'Unlike rent paying, which do not provide' (should be 'does not'), 'property prices are tend to increase' (should be 'tend to'), and 'tenants may often move to if the landlord decides' (the 'to' is unnecessary). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement would help elevate the score.
