IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In recent years, the ownership of house has become a subject of intense debate in modern society. While some people argue that renting a home is better option as an individual can save his money which then can be invested anywhere else, I firmly believe that owning a home rather than renting one is an indispensable in today's era. This essay will discuss the reasons why this is a positive development.
On the one hand, in some countries the government imposing the rule over citizens that owning a home is mandatory; I personally believe that it is a positive development because homes are the rudimentary need of humans so individuals' first priority should be buying the home rather then living on rental one. Additionally, by buying their our houses people can save the money which they give away every month as a rent. Moreover, buy buying the residence it allows them to modify the houses and give it the shape that they want.
On the other hand, if the government imposes the rule, there are some duties of the government too which they need to fullfil such as they can give the subsidies to poor and needy one who don't have that much funds which required to buy a land and then construct a house on it. Moreover, A survey conducted by the University of East Anglia's graduates in the year 2025 explained itself that 40% individuals did not have the funds which required to buy a house so they appealed to the government to announce some public schemes which can benefit them.
In conclusion, from my perspective owned house offers a prosperity to individual that a person can not feel by living on rent and will continuously facing depression and stress as they have to pay every month beyond that they that amount in that month or not. The government should also need to provide facilities to needy ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While you provide reasons like financial savings and personal modification, the argument regarding government mandates is confusing and lacks logical depth. The conclusion introduces new ideas about depression and stress that were not previously established in the body paragraphs, which weakens the overall coherence of your position. To improve, ensure each paragraph focuses on a single, well-supported idea that directly relates to your stated position.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is occasionally hindered by awkward transitions and unclear referencing. For example, the shift from discussing personal benefits to government duties in the second and third paragraphs feels disjointed. While you use cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'Moreover', they are sometimes used mechanically or inappropriately, such as starting a sentence with 'Moreover, buy buying'. The referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of your argument. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'indispensable', 'rudimentary', and 'subsidies'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'ownership of house' (should be 'home ownership'), 'living on rental one' (should be 'renting'), and 'buy buying the residence'. These errors occasionally impede the natural flow of the text. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your vocabulary is used accurately in context rather than relying on repetitive or slightly misused phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that affect clarity. Common issues include missing articles ('the' ownership, 'the' government), incorrect verb forms ('government imposing' instead of 'government imposes'), and punctuation errors. Some sentences are also structurally fragmented or run-on, such as the final sentence in the conclusion. While these errors do not completely prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage would significantly improve your accuracy.
