IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
People in few countries prefer having there own house rather than renting it.
I think it is a more logically approach to own a house because it gives you mental comfort.you need to spend big one time and forget about it for all your life unless there is a natural disaster or something.where as rent stays always at the back of your head and you really need to plan your budget that way
In few counties owning a house is preference over renting a house.in my country the first step of becoming successful is owning a house third class citizens dream for it and for middle class it is an achievement. In metro cities there is some existence of this concept but rural areas all the people own there house.there is no thing such as rent.renting have it’s own drawbacks which put financial pressure in one’s mind.
Where as renting also can be very benifitial . Some people don’t earn enough to own house.they are hand to mouth so they rent a house. The owner of house gets money and tenant get roof over his head.some times students come for other cities for sake of study back home there parents can get them whole house to they rent a dorm.
In conclusion it is better to own a house it is beneficial for your family you can pass it down your bloodline and you don’t get bothered by taxes and business sharks.but if there are limitations, renting isn’t a bad either depends on you situation

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is somewhat superficial. The reasons for the importance of home ownership (mental comfort, financial security) are mentioned but not deeply explored. The discussion on whether it is positive or negative is also brief and lacks nuanced argumentation. While the position is clear, the ideas are not fully extended, and the response relies on generalizations rather than detailed support. To improve, you should provide more specific examples or logical reasoning to justify your points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow is often disrupted by poor sentence structure and a lack of cohesive devices. Transitions between ideas are frequently missing or mechanical, such as the abrupt shift between the introduction and the body paragraphs. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, and the internal structure of paragraphs is weak, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of your argument. Improving the use of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic or informal language. Phrases like 'big one time' and 'business sharks' are either imprecise or inappropriate for an academic essay. There are also several spelling errors, such as 'benifitial' and 'there' used instead of 'their'. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of variety and the presence of errors in word choice and spelling restrict the score. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to use more precise, academic vocabulary and ensure correct spelling throughout your work.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement, punctuation (e.g., missing spaces after periods, lack of capitalization), and sentence fragments. For example, 'renting have it’s own drawbacks' contains both a verb agreement error and a possessive error. The range of sentence structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with some attempts at complex ones that are often faulty. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, punctuation rules, and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement.
