IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some countries, people are more keen to buy a home rather than renting it as it significantly correlated to many socio-economic and cultural elements. In my perspective, it is a positive characteristic and enhance their quality of life.

In many societies, owning a home is considered as the symbol of social status. It is an incredible milestone in their life cycle when they turn into early adulthood and potentially add value to their social heirarchy. Consequently, people are mindful to start the savings in the initial years of their employment, so that they could achieve their dream home and move in align with the social expectations.

Neverthless to say, this social expectation creates social inequality in the society. People are judged by the community members in terms of the ownership of a mere building. The worst part is those who are unable to secure a home in a certain age are tend to be viewed as incapable and are unable to fullfill their committments.

However, this notion creates many positive developments in the community living. It is worth to note that in such countries, people are motivated in their younger age to earn money and secure a home according to their priorities. On top of that, it positively affects their family dynamics as people tend to move out and start living in their own homes. Recent family researches are in line with the idea that smaller homes exhibit positve family dynamics and viceversa.

In summary, ownership of a home is widely accepted as a symbol of social prestiege in many countries as they regard renting is the chepest option for lving. Hence it is worth to mention that it is a positive situation and contributes significantly to the quality of life of the people in many countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as social status and financial motivation. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The discussion on social inequality is introduced but not fully explored in relation to the 'positive or negative' stance, leading to a slight contradiction where the essay argues it is positive despite acknowledging significant negative social consequences. To reach a higher band, ensure that the arguments are more consistently linked to your overall position throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Consequently', 'Neverthless', and 'On top of that', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or misused, such as 'Neverthless to say' (a mix of 'Needless to say' and 'Nevertheless'). The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the negative aspects of inequality and the positive aspects of family dynamics could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with attempts at more sophisticated terms like 'socio-economic', 'heirarchy', and 'prestige'. However, there are several spelling errors ('heirarchy', 'Neverthless', 'fullfill', 'prestiege', 'chepest', 'lving') and some awkward collocations, such as 'move in align with' and 'exhibit positve family dynamics'. While the meaning is clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on accurate spelling and more natural word combinations will improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'are tend to be viewed' (should be 'tend to be viewed'), 'It is worth to note' (should be 'It is worth noting'), and 'regard renting is the chepest option' (should be 'regard renting as the cheapest option'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Increasing the number of error-free complex sentences and proofreading for subject-verb agreement will help improve your accuracy.
