IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's modern era of science and technology, housing sector has became the most important part of economy and financial status. Citizens of several countries are preferring to buy and own a house rather than living in the house of a landlord. Stronger financial status is an important factor which is shaping today's housing sector, which is a positive change.

There are several factors responsible for improving the financial health of people such as, increased employment rates, more job opportunities, job security, and higher salaries. These contributing factors are the reason for not choosing a rented house for living. However, in many countries there is a negative situation that forces people to buy a house rather than renting one, because of the higher rent prices, lack of the availability of rented house, etc.

This is not a positive development, as it forces people to buy a house which they cannot afford due to weaker financial conditions, leading to several long term consequences such as debt trap and risk of getting bankrupt. Moreover, banks in these countries cannot contribute in uplifting this situation due to higher interest rates and lack of official documents which are necessary for getting a loan. As a result, people often cannot get the money or they end up getting bankrupt.

Therefore, it can be concluded that, importance of owning a house rather than renting one is a kind of negative situation and negative development, as people are not able to get the financial help and assistance to help them renting a house, as it is an affordable alternative of buying a house.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat inconsistent. While you identify reasons like financial status and market pressures, the argument regarding whether it is a positive or negative situation is slightly contradictory; you initially label it a 'positive change' in the introduction but then argue it is a 'negative situation' throughout the body paragraphs. To improve, ensure your position is consistent and clearly articulated from the start. The ideas are relevant but could be supported with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'As a result' to connect ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the introduction's claim and the body paragraphs' arguments is abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression could be smoother. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one without repeating the same points about financial difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'financial status', 'employment rates', and 'long term consequences'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'housing sector has became' (should be 'has become') and 'lack of the availability of rented house' (should be 'lack of availability of rental properties'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Focus on learning collocations related to economics and housing to enhance your expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'housing sector has became' (tense error), 'contribute in uplifting' (preposition error), and 'help them renting' (should be 'help them rent'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, and the correct use of prepositions. Proofreading for these common slips would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
