IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries, owning a home is very important for people instead of renting a house. There are many reasons for this situation. I think it is a positive situation, but it also have some disadvantages.

One reason people want to own a home is because they feel more safe and comfortable. When people have their own house, they dont need to worry about landlord. They can also change the house according to their choice. For example, they can paint the walls or make a new room. Another reason is that house can be a good investment. If the price of house increase in future, people can sell it and get more money.

I think owning a home is mostly positive. Firstly, people do not have to pay rent every month when they buy their own house. This is good for their future, specially when they are old and they dont have a job. Secondly, people can live in their home for long time and they feel more secure.

However, buying a home is not easy for everyone. Houses are very expensive and many young people cannot afford it. They may need to borrow money from bank and pay it for many years. This can cause stress and financial problems.

In conclusion, people prefer owning a home because it give them security and it can be a good investment. Although it is expensive, I think owning a home is more positive than renting . It is a good future investment for their family too .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it explains why home ownership is important and provides a clear opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are relevant, such as financial security and investment potential. However, the development is somewhat basic. For instance, the point about 'stress and financial problems' is mentioned but not fully explored in terms of its broader societal impact. To reach a higher band, you should aim to extend your arguments with more specific examples or deeper analysis, ensuring that the 'why' behind your opinions is thoroughly explained.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. There is a logical progression from the reasons for ownership to the evaluation of the situation. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes repetitive or mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., using pronouns or synonyms to refer back to previous ideas) is more precise to improve the flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use common terms like 'investment', 'security', and 'afford'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple phrasing. There are also minor errors, such as 'specially' instead of 'especially' and 'landlord' used without an article. To achieve a higher score, incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and collocations, such as 'financial stability' or 'long-term asset', rather than repeating simple words like 'good' or 'money'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it also have', 'it give them') and article usage (e.g., 'borrow money from bank', 'price of house'). Punctuation is generally functional, but these recurring errors in basic grammar prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading your work to catch these small but frequent slips, and try to vary your sentence structure by using more subordinate clauses.
