IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In some of the countries owing a home rather than renting one is very important because in some countries we have to pay for the expenses and if we rent a home than it will create a new expense which create problems in our management of the income so in some of the countries people prefer to own a home which help them to reduce the burden of the rent per month this is one the reason for that and secondly, some people are in the habit of saving the money per month but if they live in a rented home then it will be very difficult for them to save the money there is no money left to save for the people who want to run a small business from their own savings.
but some people like to stay in the rented home because in some countries there is huge tax on owing a property therefore they choose to live in the rented home rather than that of owning the home that why the rich people are now a days they prefer to live the Dubai and in the middle east countries. This is the main reason why some people like to live on the rented home to avoid the tax. they invest their money to start a company and therefore they don't like to buy a home. In the conclusions living on the rented home has some positive points and the negatives points and people live according to their own thinking.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why home ownership is important and whether this is a positive or negative situation. However, the development is limited. The ideas regarding financial burden and savings are relevant but lack depth and specific examples. The discussion on the 'positive or negative' aspect is quite brief and lacks a clear, consistent position, as the conclusion simply states that there are both sides without evaluating them effectively. To improve, you should expand on your arguments with more detailed reasoning and ensure your personal stance is clearly articulated throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear paragraph structure, consisting of only two long blocks of text. The flow of ideas is hindered by the lack of proper punctuation, particularly the absence of full stops, which makes the text feel like a series of run-on sentences. While some cohesive devices like 'secondly' and 'therefore' are used, they are often placed awkwardly. The progression of ideas is difficult to follow because of the lack of clear topic sentences and logical transitions between the arguments for ownership and the arguments for renting.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying on simple phrases such as 'pay for the expenses', 'save the money', and 'live in a rented home'. There are several inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'owing a home' instead of 'owning a home' and 'live the Dubai' instead of 'live in Dubai'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas clearly. To reach a higher band, you need to incorporate more precise terminology related to finance and housing, such as 'mortgage', 'financial stability', 'capital investment', or 'tax implications'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The essay is characterized by a lack of sentence boundaries. The entire text consists of very few sentences, with most clauses joined by 'and' or 'but' without appropriate punctuation. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('it will create a new expense which create problems') and missing articles. The range of structures is limited to simple and compound sentences; there is a lack of complex sentence structures. Punctuation is almost entirely absent, which significantly impacts the readability and clarity of your arguments.
