IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some parts of the world, people wish to build their own house, whereas others are happy with rentals. This is a personal choice and both have their own pros and cons.

On one hand, living in the self-made house not only gives stability but also mental satisfaction in life. For instance, for some it could be a dream to have a space of their own which can be personalised and can be considered as an asset. Over the years, property can be sold at a higher price, further resulting in profits,

On the other hand, renting is preferred in most cases when people are not confined to stay at one place. Youngters usually choose to adapt themselves into the dynamic world, leading to live a flexible life. For example, people feel stress due to financial burden, as investing a large chunk of their savings makes them feel worried about paying off loans.

However, it all depends on how one thinks and what sort of living style is preferred. So, I believe having an apartment of my own is a more viable option as gradually it is important to settle down in life and invest money in a right place. Even though, it could cost your golden years of life, but it will be worthwhile. Family can be set up, kids will have their school and canoot uproot them from their lifestyle to keep settling them again and again. So thir is the most approprite opti

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether it is positive or negative. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of development. The arguments regarding stability and financial burden are relevant but remain somewhat superficial. The conclusion is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence, which prevents a fully developed final position. To improve, you should expand on your points with more specific examples and ensure the essay meets the length requirement to allow for a more thorough exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, and there is a basic attempt at logical progression. You use some cohesive devices like 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand' to signal shifts in the argument. However, the flow is occasionally disrupted by the incomplete final sentence and some awkward transitions. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure feels a bit mechanical. To achieve a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, fully developed topic sentence that connects smoothly to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your ideas clearly. You use some appropriate terms such as 'financial burden', 'dynamic world', and 'viable option'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'Youngters' instead of 'Youngsters' and 'canoot' instead of 'cannot'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items related to the topic of housing and economics.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'leading to live a flexible life' (should be 'leading to a flexible life') and 'thir is the most approprite opti' (incomplete and misspelled). Punctuation is generally functional, but the incomplete ending significantly impacts the grammatical integrity of the final paragraph. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your complex sentences are constructed accurately. Proofreading for minor slips and ensuring all sentences are complete will help raise your score.
