IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some parts of the world, people wish to build their own house, whereas others are happy with rentals. This is totally a personal choice and both have their own pros and cons.

On one hand, living in the self-made house not only gives stability but also mental satisfaction in life. For instance, for some it could be a dream to have a space of their own which can be personalised and can be considered as an asset. Over the years, property can be sold at a higher price, further resulting in ,

On the other hand, renting is preferred in most cases when people are not confined to stay at one place. Youngters usually choose to adapt themselves into the dynamic world, leading to live a flexible life. For example, people feel stress due to financial burden, as investing a large chunk of their savings makes them feel worried about paying off loans.

However, it all depends on how one thinks and what sort of living style is preferred. So, I believe having an apartment of my own is a more viable option as gradually it is important to settle down in life and invest money in a right place. Even though, it could cost your golden years of life, but it will be worthwhile. Family can be set up, kids will have their school, and cannot uproot them from their lifestyle to keep settling them again and again. So, this is the most appropriate option as an individual.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why home ownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation. However, the development is uneven. The first paragraph ends abruptly with a comma, leaving the argument about property value incomplete. While you clearly state your position that ownership is a 'more viable option,' the reasoning relies heavily on personal opinion rather than broader societal analysis. To reach a higher band, ensure that all points are fully extended and that the conclusion follows logically from the arguments presented. The ideas are relevant, but the lack of completion in the first body paragraph limits the overall depth of the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'However' to signal shifts in your argument. However, the cohesion is occasionally mechanical, and the sentence structure in the final paragraph is slightly repetitive. Additionally, the abrupt ending of the second paragraph ('resulting in ,') disrupts the flow and indicates a lack of careful proofreading. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that every sentence is complete will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dynamic world,' 'financial burden,' and 'viable option.' However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'living in the self-made house' (which sounds like a DIY project rather than buying a home) and 'cannot uproot them from their lifestyle to keep settling them again and again.' The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your range to include more topic-specific collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'leading to live a flexible life' (should be 'leading to a flexible life') and 'invest money in a right place' (should be 'the right place'). The punctuation is generally functional, but the incomplete sentence at the end of the second paragraph is a significant error. While these mistakes do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will improve your accuracy.
