IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
While some argue that buying own house instead of renting is essential. There may be several factors involved, but, I strongly agree with this view as owning a home contributes towards more autonomous, independent ,peaceful life, and positive aspects for future life.
A major reason for holding this opinion is , because living in our own house provides opportunities for more independent and peaceful life rathe than living in a rented accommodation. For instance, any one having own property can make necessary modifications as per their requirements regarding maintenance, flooring, restructuring. People can decide on their own about the use of their property instead of seeking approval from landlord or housing company. Living in own house also promotes personal and mental well-being because people have lower levels of stress due to being free from paying rents.
Owning a house is also a source of financial stability for future life, because many parents strive for own houses to secure the future of next generations, so that, they can happily live free from burdens of rents and migration to other houses.
However, a substantial number of population can not afford to buy residence due to rising cost of living. Renting a house becomes a basic need for a shelter to protect family. But, people living in rented houses face many difficulties such as leakage, heating problem, and they have to wait for the actions provided by landlords. They also have to suffer through anxiety of paying all bills in time and take care of housing facilities. All these factors causes one's physical and mental well-being negatively.
In conclusion, I believe that owning a house is a positive situation for more independent, peaceful life , and financial stability in long term. Renting a property has undeniable disadvantages of reliance on landlord, increased stress, and dealing with unexpected problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing a clear opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The position is consistent throughout. Ideas are relevant, such as the autonomy of modifying property and the financial security it provides. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly in the discussion of stress and mental well-being. To reach a higher band, you could expand on the societal implications of home ownership versus renting, rather than focusing primarily on individual maintenance issues.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance', 'However', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, such as the opening sentence which is a fragment ('While some argue...'). Additionally, the use of referencing could be more precise; for example, 'All these factors causes' lacks a clear antecedent. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'autonomous', 'financial stability', and 'restructuring'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'any one having own property' (should be 'anyone who owns property') and 'suffer through anxiety' (which is slightly unnatural). The vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, the first sentence is an incomplete clause, and there are issues with article usage ('living in our own house' vs 'living in a rented house'). Subject-verb agreement is also inconsistent, such as 'All these factors causes'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, they occur frequently enough to limit the score.
