IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that, people from a few countries prefer having their own house rather than renting one. I believe that it is a negative constraint if it is unplanned. This essay will summarize the issues regarding this topic and will present my opinion.

Overall, it is evident that some of the counties have a negative mindset that owning a house is very important for a person than renting. It is because of the inaccurate financial decision. For example, a person who is already renting an apartment might think that most of his income is spent towards the rent of his house. Moreover, he will be convinced that owning it will not only reduce his expenses but also give him the ownership on his house. Meanwhile, it will result in having a massive debt on the person.

Another factor is that, societal pressure can also have an effect on an individual's owning decisions. Family and friends can play a crucial role in convincing the person to purchase a property. For instance, a person can be pressurized by his own family to buy a house just to avoid inferior complexity. As a result, this will end up as a negative situation for the individual. Consequently, it will affect his mental health.

Therefore, It is clear that owning a house may provide you with temporary satisfaction but without proper planning and execution it will end up as a financial burden for a person. Furthermore, it can also cause mental distress. Hence, I strongly agree that it is a negative situation and it can be avoided with strong precautionary measures.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the importance of home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of 'inaccurate financial decision' is a bit vague, and the concept of 'inferior complexity' (likely meaning 'inferiority complex') is not fully explored or clearly linked to the argument. To reach a higher band, the essay would benefit from more detailed examples or a deeper analysis of the societal pressures mentioned. The ideas are relevant but could be extended further to provide a more comprehensive discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main points. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'Consequently' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the connection between the financial argument and the conclusion could be smoother. The referencing is mostly clear, but the flow between sentences occasionally feels a bit disjointed due to the simple sentence structures used throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. The student uses some relevant terms like 'financial burden' and 'societal pressure', but there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'negative constraint' and 'inferior complexity', which do not accurately convey the intended meaning. There is also some repetition of basic vocabulary. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and a wider variety of topic-specific vocabulary to express complex ideas more naturally. The current level is sufficient for communication but does not demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the range is limited. While there are some error-free sentences, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation, such as the unnecessary comma after 'that' in 'Another factor is that, societal pressure' and the capitalization error in 'Therefore, It is clear'. The use of articles and prepositions is occasionally inconsistent. The grammatical control is generally good enough that communication is not impeded, but the lack of more varied, error-free complex structures prevents a higher score. Focusing on sentence variety and proofreading for punctuation would be beneficial.
