IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some countries it is considered pivotal to own a house instead of renting for residents. I think people do this in order to secure their place where they going to live for a long time. In my view this positive development.
To commence with, inhabitants from the few countries choose to buy house, rather than renting. Because, owning a house provides a life long security for the future. However, rented houses are available only for the limited time on contracts. When the house contract is finished, tenants have to vacant house or resign a contract for the further stay. As a result, residents have to pay security deposit again for new lease. Which makes renting more expensive each year.
On the other hand, having private property has several benefits. Firstly, residents do not have to follow rules when they are living in their own house, whereas, landlords put some rules on their tenants, such as pets are not allowed, no smoking, guests are not allowed or coming late is prohibited. Secondly, individuals can do changes in their property whenever and how they want, for instance, painting walls and change furniture, while, this is not possible in rented houses or have to take permission in some conditions.
In conclusion, in my perspective there are plentiful positive advantages regarding owing a house. You do not have to worry about contract and unnecessary expenses after buying a house. Moreover, no need stay under unwanted rules and restrictions, and make choices according to you.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and expressing a clear opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are relevant, focusing on financial security and personal autonomy. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the argument regarding 'security' could be expanded with more specific examples of economic stability. The position is clear throughout, but the conclusion is slightly repetitive of the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explored with more depth and nuance rather than just listing benefits.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Because, owning a house...' starting a sentence. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the use of 'Which' at the start of a sentence to connect ideas. Improving the flow between sentences by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring pronouns clearly refer to their antecedents would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'pivotal' and 'autonomy' (implied), but the range remains somewhat basic. There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'vacant house' (should be 'vacate the house') and 'do changes' (should be 'make changes'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary related to housing and economics, while ensuring that the words chosen are used in their correct grammatical form.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include missing articles ('buy house'), subject-verb agreement issues ('tenants have to vacant house'), and awkward phrasing ('no need stay under unwanted rules'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate better control. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, particularly the use of articles and verb forms, before attempting more complex, error-prone structures.
