IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some countries, many people believe that owning a home is more important than renting one. There are several reasons for this situation. In my opinion, I think owning a house is mostly a positive thing, although it can also create some problems.

One main reason why people prefer to own a house is that it gives them a feeling of security. When people have their own home, they do not need to worry about increasing rent or the landlord asking them to leave. They can also make changes in the house according to their choice. Another reason is that a house can be a good investment. Property prices can increase over many years, so people may sell their house in the future and make a profit. In some countries, owning a home is also considered a symbol of success and a stable family life.

I believe that this situation is generally positive. Firstly, owning a home can provide financial security in the future. After people finish paying their home loan, they do not have to pay monthly rent. Secondly, people can give their house to their children, so it can become an important family asset. It also gives people more freedom because they do not have to follow many rules made by landlords.

However, buying a house can be very expensive and people may have to take a large loan from a bank. This can cause financial stress, especially for young people. Some people may also spend most of their savings on a house and have less money for other important things.

In conclusion, people prefer owning homes because of security, investment and social status. Although buying a house can be financially difficult, I believe that owning a home is generally a positive situation because it provides stability and financial security in the long term.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it explains why home ownership is valued and provides a clear opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, such as the mention of financial security, investment potential, and the psychological benefits of autonomy. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced examples or explore the 'negative' side of the situation with slightly more depth, as the current discussion on the downsides is somewhat brief compared to the advantages.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'One main reason', 'Another reason', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'However' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument. The transition between the reasons for ownership and the evaluation of the situation is smooth, ensuring the reader remains engaged with the writer's line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'financial security', 'property prices', 'family asset', and 'monthly rent'. While the range is adequate for the task, it is somewhat functional rather than sophisticated. There is little use of less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions that would demonstrate a higher level of control. However, the word choice is accurate throughout, and there are no spelling errors that impede communication, making the language natural and appropriate for the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. For example, the use of conditional structures and complex sentences like 'When people have their own home, they do not need to worry about...' is handled well. Punctuation is used correctly to support the flow of ideas. While the range of structures is solid, the essay relies on a fairly standard sentence pattern. Incorporating more varied clause structures or passive voice constructions would help elevate the grammatical range further.
