IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many countries, Owning a home is considered more important than renting it. This is because of the financial security and social status. For many families, a house is not just a place to live but also the way of stability and achivement. Owning a house also provides long term financial benefits. For example, a property purchased is seen as an assets and renting one is considered as a waste of money as their is no return of it. while it also plays an important role for future generation as they already have a secure asset.

On the other hand, renting is seen as a temporary solution for people who is in need of hosuing for short duration because of their work in different city or a student living in other place for studying. But they might face different challenges like tenants may face rise in the rent sudden situation where they have to shift to different location which indirectly relates to the problem renting house and due to this reasons people often prefer to buy instead of renting a property.

In conclusion, I think that this is a positive situation because owning a house describes one's stablity, pride, and financial security. while sometimes it can create pressure when the price of the property many be higher than the amount needed to be spend. Owning a home gives a family tension free environment and something valuable to pass on to children. Because of this reasons people prefer to own a property instead of renting one.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention financial security and social status, these points are not fully explored with detailed examples or logical depth. The conclusion provides a clear position, but the supporting arguments in the body paragraphs remain quite general. To improve, aim to expand on your points by explaining the 'why' and 'how' more thoroughly, ensuring that each paragraph provides a comprehensive analysis of the prompt's requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For instance, the transition between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother; phrases like 'due to this reasons' and 'because of this reasons' are used to link ideas but are grammatically incorrect and lack variety. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the lack of sophisticated linking words makes the flow feel a bit disjointed. Improving the range of transition signals (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') would significantly enhance the overall flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'financial security', 'stability', and 'temporary solution'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'achivement' (spelling), 'as their is no return of it' (incorrect phrasing), and 'hosuing' (spelling). Some collocations are also slightly unnatural, such as 'tension free environment'. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more precise vocabulary and ensuring accurate spelling. Expanding your range to include more topic-specific collocations would also help convey your ideas with greater sophistication and clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('people who is in need', 'price of the property many be higher'), missing articles ('in different city'), and punctuation errors. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage. Incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses or relative clauses, while ensuring they are error-free, will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
