IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that owning a home is very important for people instead of renting a house. There are many reasons for this, However in my opinion it is positive situation. This essay will discuss the possible causes of it before explaining why I hold this view.

One of main reasons why owning home is important is financial security and a stable place to live. Purchasing a house is good investment which can benefit people in long run, it can have good value in future. In addition, owning a home give a sense of stability to people, as they will have permanent shelter to live. Rental houses are temporary , if they suffer from financial it would be difficult for them to pay rent each month. As a result they may lose their homes whereas if people own home no matter what situation they are going through they will always have a good place to live with their family. Furthermore, renting can be more expensive because we have to pay a high amount of money every single month and rent keep increasing with time as inflation increases. However, buying home is one time investment for life, then people can spend money to cover other expenses.

In my opinion this is positive situation as buying own home has many advantages. The main positive aspect is they would have stable shelter to live which can provide the sense of security for themselves and their families. The value of land increase over time, they can pass their home to their children as a heritance making it valuable assets for future generations.

In conclusion, I think its positive scenario because people can get multiple advantages when they own a home rather than renting one which is unstable and temporary solution.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the importance of home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as financial security, stability, and inheritance. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the concept of 'stability' and 'security,' which are mentioned in both body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be extended with more specific examples or a deeper exploration of the economic implications. The position is clear throughout, though the explanation of why it is a 'positive' situation could be more nuanced.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'However in my opinion it is positive situation' (missing a comma and an article). The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. The use of cohesive devices is adequate but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'inflation,' 'investment,' and 'heritance' (though 'inheritance' is the correct term). However, there are several word-choice errors and missing articles, such as 'owning home' instead of 'owning a home' and 'suffer from financial' instead of 'financial hardship.' The range is sufficient to communicate, but it lacks the precision and variety of less common lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('owning home,' 'buying home'), subject-verb agreement ('rent keep increasing'), and punctuation (run-on sentences like 'Rental houses are temporary , if they suffer...'). These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text. While the writer attempts complex structures, the control over them is inconsistent. To improve, the writer should focus on basic grammatical accuracy, specifically article usage and sentence boundary punctuation.
