IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In few countries having a own home rather than renting another home is very important for individuals . In this essay we will simply discuss the main causes and also will put some knowledge on the positive and negative situations.

In some countries like the under developing countries like take an example for Pakistan there are many peoples which think that having our own home home in Pakistan is more safer than renting a home. This is more likely to be true because having our owning a home make a individual at a very strong place other than the person who is renting a home. There is a very strong reason for this because in under developing countries there is a shortage of food and basic needs just like the house is the basic requirement for the family in order to surviving. Moreover the family members especially the father is in big relief that they have the shelter and have no fear of kicking out from it or the rent money problem.

In this paragraph we will discuss mainly the root cause. the first and very cause for people think that owing a home is better than the rent one is mainly because that is provides shelter to them and also for their children. The second cause is that the person who is renting a house is in continouse stress that he is to pay rent in the end of month and in under developing countries there is shortage of jobs and also the pay rate is very low ans a person nearly meets its ans his family basic needs.

Now if we discuss on the positive situation it is more likely good to have our own house rather than renting a house and i usually think that it is a good decision to have a house but also it also have some negative impact like the house owner have to pay the taxes and to cover up the house management like to repair anything while the one who is renting a house is in safer side because he does not have to pay the taxes or the other repairing bills it should be billed by the house owner.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is inconsistent. While the reasons (security, financial stability) are relevant, the discussion of the 'positive or negative' aspect is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. The essay structure is slightly hindered by the inclusion of meta-commentary, such as 'In this essay we will simply discuss...', which is unnecessary. To improve, focus on developing arguments with more sophisticated examples rather than repeating the same points about rent and stress across different paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'In this paragraph we will discuss...' or 'The first and very cause...'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences is sometimes disjointed. To reach a higher band, you should use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'conversely') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that transitions smoothly into the next, rather than explicitly stating what the paragraph will contain.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There is significant repetition of basic terms like 'house', 'home', 'renting', and 'people'. Some collocations are unnatural, such as 'under developing countries' (should be 'developing countries') and 'at a very strong place' (should be 'in a more secure position'). There are also minor errors in word formation, such as 'owning' used as 'owning a home' in a way that creates redundancy. Expanding your vocabulary to include more academic and precise terminology would significantly improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical errors, such as 'having our owning a home make a individual at a very strong place' and 'it should be billed by the house owner'. Punctuation is inconsistent, and there are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'a individual', 'the end of month'). To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and reducing the frequency of errors, as these currently impede the clarity of your arguments in several places.
