IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In many nations, owing a house is considered cenical, while others prefer to rent a home. There are several reasons why people want to own their homes. In my opinion, this is generally a positive situation, although it can also create some financial problems.
One main reasone why people prefer to own a home is that it gives them a feeling of security. When people have their own house they do not have to worry about the landlords inceasing the rent or asking them to leave. Anothere reason is that, they can make changes to the house as their needs. For instance, people can easily renovate the roomas according to their childrens preference; Moreover, buying their own home is the good investment for their future, which gives them the sense of financial stability. However, property prices may increase over time, so homeowners can sell their homes later and make a profit.
On the other hand, it also has some drawbacks like, homes are very expensive now a days and people may need to take a large loan from a bank moreover, this can cause financial stress, especially if they do not have a stable income. In contrast, paying a rent is more flexible because people can easily move if they get a new job in another city. Along with this, many individuals struggle to find a suitable home within their budgets because of overpriced properties in the market.
To conclude, owing a house is a positive outcome as it gives a sense of security, stability and achievement to people, although it also increases the financial stress as well as the feeling of social inequality towards the individuals who have fixed income.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify reasons for the importance of home ownership, such as security and financial stability, and provide a balanced view by discussing both the positive aspects and the drawbacks. Your position is clear throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are more fully developed; for instance, the point about 'social inequality' in the conclusion is introduced too late and lacks supporting evidence in the body paragraphs. Expanding on these ideas with more specific examples or deeper analysis would strengthen the overall task response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'One main reason', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In contrast' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with punctuation and sentence structure that occasionally affect the flow. For example, the sentence 'Anothere reason is that, they can make changes...' contains unnecessary commas. Improving the variety and naturalness of your linking words will help achieve a more sophisticated level of cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'financial stability', 'renovate', and 'overpriced properties'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'owing' instead of 'owning', 'cenical' (likely intended as 'essential'), 'reasone', 'inceasing', 'Anothere', and 'roomas'. These errors are noticeable and detract from the professional tone of the essay. To improve, focus on proofreading your work for common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more precise collocations to express your ideas with greater clarity and sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the good investment'), subject-verb agreement, and punctuation (e.g., 'like, homes are...'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent. To progress, work on mastering the use of articles and ensure that your complex sentences are punctuated correctly. Focusing on sentence variety and reducing these recurring minor errors will significantly improve your score in this criterion.
