IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Home is the basic need for people. It is essential for some people to have their own home in some countries rather than renting home.I have mixed opinion about this statement which I explain in paragraphs below.

On one hand, firstly, the people who need their own home has not afford to much expense for renting. In some areas the the rent of houses is to much high.Secondly, the renting houses do not provide the all basic needs for example proper dranage system and the water supply.Thirdly, there is also some places where no renting houses are available so in this type of condition it is important for people to have their own home.

On the other hand, the renting home also have same benefits. To begin, in cities where the price of bying new house is to much expensive then the renting home is help in these cities. For example the price of houses in some countreis like Australia and Canada is to much high and the student who come their foe study cannot buy thier own home then in this situataion the renting house is beneficial for these students.Morever, the pressure of maintainence rented house is not on the renters. The maintainence of house is on the owner of house like the paint of house or the water supply and drainage system.

To conclude with my opinion, owning home rather than renting is important for people im some countreis.Government may take an action to give them a house who cannot afford the expenses of renting. They also decrese the rent for students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why home ownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation. However, the development of ideas is limited. For instance, the argument regarding the lack of drainage and water supply in rented homes is a specific point, but it is not fully explained or supported with sufficient detail. The position is stated in the introduction, but the conclusion introduces new, underdeveloped suggestions (government intervention) rather than summarizing the main arguments. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more depth and ensure your conclusion directly reflects the arguments presented in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use basic cohesive devices like 'On one hand', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'To conclude'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the logical progression within paragraphs is occasionally disrupted by grammatical errors. For example, the transition between the benefits of owning a home and the benefits of renting is clear, but the internal structure of the arguments lacks sophistication. Improving the use of referencing and varied linking words would help the ideas connect more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is frequent repetition of basic words like 'home', 'house', 'renting', and 'price'. Phrases such as 'to much high' and 'bying new house' show limited control over collocations and spelling. To improve, you should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary related to housing, finance, and social issues, and focus on correct word forms. For example, instead of 'to much high', use 'prohibitively expensive'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the people who need their own home has not afford'), missing articles, and incorrect preposition usage (e.g., 'come their foe study'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your score.
