IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Having own property to live rather than renting a house is always a question of discussion among various people in many countries. I partially agree with this statement because both the options have their own merits and demerits and many factors contributes to either side of the discussion.
Regarding owning property, many people emphasized on its importance. It is because, the inflation is rising day by day and spending a huge chunk of income on monthly house rent would be an excessive burden. Additionally, property ownership is the method of long term investment for numerous individuals, which give them the sense of ownership and future security. However, the downside of owning a home is that, people block a huge amount of their savings on a single piece of property which on the other side could be invested on more better ways which could provide higher return.
In contrast, there are substantial number of indivisuals who spend their entire lives on rented house. Since property prices are skyrocketing nowadays, it has become near to impossible for people to buy the property and are compelled to stay on rented home. However, there are another kind of individuals who enjoy shifting to newer places because it allows them to explore and interact with other people, which could give them the opportunity to excel in their lives both professionally and personally.
In conclusion, people are more inclined towards buying their own home rather than living in the rented place. I believe that the country's economy boom when there is a value for money and it is usually indicated by the buying capacity of people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the reasons for ownership are clear, the discussion regarding whether the situation is positive or negative is less explicit. The conclusion introduces a new idea about the economy rather than clearly summarising the previous arguments. To reach a higher band, ensure that your position is clearly stated in the introduction and consistently supported throughout the body paragraphs, with a more direct answer to the 'positive or negative' aspect of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Additionally', 'However', and 'In contrast', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the second paragraph where 'another kind of individuals' is used. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the link between the final paragraph's conclusion and the previous arguments could be strengthened to ensure a more cohesive flow of thought.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'inflation', 'long term investment', and 'skyrocketing'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'invested on more better ways' (should be 'invested in better ways') and 'indivisuals' (spelling error). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is sometimes lacking. To improve, focus on using collocations more accurately and ensuring that your word choices are natural in the context of the argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Having own property' (should be 'Having one's own property'), 'many factors contributes' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'the country's economy boom' (should be 'booms'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will also help boost your score.
