IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many countries, people prefer to own a home instead of renting one. This happens because some people believe that when they live in a rented property, their lifestyle gets uncertain. In my opinion, this is a positive situation as buying a house also serves an important purpose of investment.
Usually when people rent a house, they pay a pre-decided price at the end of each month. Many times, they are unable to pay the complete rent. In that case, home owners constantly pressurize them to pay the remaining rent. People usually do not like this consistent pressure on them. Furthermore, there is a high uncertainty when individuals stay in a rented house because they can be kicked out of the house by the owner. Sometimes, others are willing to pay a higher rent for the same house than the current resident. In that case, owners prefer to give the same house to the person paying more. Therefore, family living in the house at that time are asked to leave. All these factors result in people owning a house rather than renting it.
I believe that this is a positive situation because people can earn profits from a flat or an apartment if they own it. Whenever a person buys a house, it becomes their own property. They can sell this house whenever they want. If there is an increase in price of the house, they can sell it and earn profit. This is not the case with renting a house where ownership is not theirs. Therefore, people buying a house will serve two purposes that are they can reside in it and it can also serve as a real-estate investment.
To conclude, it can be said that people should avoid living in a house which is rented and should actually buy a house because not only will it reduce uncertainty, but will also act as a property which can be sold for profit.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing a clear opinion on whether it is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. For instance, the discussion on 'uncertainty' and 'investment' provides a solid foundation for the argument. However, the development could be more sophisticated; the points are somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the financial aspect. To reach a higher band, you could explore broader societal implications, such as the impact on community stability or the psychological benefits of home ownership, rather than focusing primarily on the landlord-tenant relationship.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore', 'Therefore', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For example, the use of 'In that case' appears twice in the second paragraph, which limits the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this situation', 'these factors') is always precise would enhance the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task and conveys meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'real-estate investment' and 'rented property'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. For instance, 'kicked out of the house' is informal; a more academic alternative would be 'evicted'. Similarly, 'pressurize them' could be replaced with 'exert financial pressure'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are recurring grammatical errors. For example, 'family living in the house' should be 'families living in the house', and 'increase in price of the house' requires an article: 'an increase in the price'. Additionally, some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'people buying a house will serve two purposes that are they can reside in it'. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and you show a reasonable attempt at complex structures.
