IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is been argued by some people that living in an own house is better than living at a rented house. I believe that this is a positive situation. This essay will discuss every situation before presenting my own thoughts.
In these modern times, one of the factor that depicts success is owning a house. Most of them prefer owning a house rather than renting one because, the people have always strived to achieve more in their lives. ,Moreover, they think that owning a house proves that they are successful. I strongly agree on this because it not only motivates a person to work harder but also builds a positive personality among different social groups. For instance, if a person has his own home, his friends and relatives will treat him with respect. Similarly, if a person rents a house then his respect is slightly lesser than someone who owns a house.
Another factor is that, having an own house will not only build wealth for their generation but also for the next generation. For example, A person who is lives at a rented apartment cannot claim and transfer that property among his children. In contrast, the person who owns the house is more likely to transfer that property to his children. His children can inherit that house in the future.
Therefore, It is important for some people that they own a house. Although, others have distinct opinions on this. I strongly agree that owning a house not only build wealth but also provides a sense of accomplishment among people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The argument regarding social status is a bit simplistic, and the claim that renting leads to 'lesser' respect is a subjective generalization that lacks depth. While the points about wealth accumulation are relevant, the essay would benefit from more nuanced exploration of the economic or psychological factors involved. The conclusion is a bit repetitive, restating the introduction rather than synthesizing the arguments effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'In contrast' are used to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by mechanical phrasing or awkward transitions, such as the comma splice in the second paragraph ('...strived to achieve more in their lives. ,Moreover...'). Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel disjointed. The progression of ideas is logical, but the overall structure could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive markers to create a smoother, more sophisticated reading experience.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. The student relies on basic phrasing, such as 'owning a house' and 'renting a house', which are repeated frequently. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'living in an own house' (should be 'living in one's own house') and 'his respect is slightly lesser' (should be 'he is respected less'). To improve, the student should incorporate more academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetitive language and demonstrate a more sophisticated command of English.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that, while not impeding communication, are noticeable. Examples include 'It is been argued' (should be 'It has been argued'), 'one of the factor' (should be 'one of the factors'), and 'A person who is lives' (should be 'A person who lives'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma placement. While the student attempts complex sentences, the control over these structures is inconsistent. Increasing the accuracy of basic subject-verb agreement and refining punctuation would significantly improve the overall quality of the writing.
